This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

is anyone else in a situation where it is all...or all with broken knee caps?  allied said that i am not permitted to make payments, it has to be the amount in its entire and it has to be within 7 days.  AND...has anyone had their cheques returned? (refusal of payment?)

(of course we are passed that time line now, just curious if i'm an isolated case)

you see, i sent in 2 cheques to the rbc for payment and they claimed they "lost" one.  (however the cheques where in the same envelope).  3 days later i get a call from allied for $688.  the bank at that point refused to take to me about my csl.  a week after that, i have my cheque returned with a note from allied saying "non-certified funds".  if i knew i was in collections, i wouldn't have sent in payment to the bank.  funny...i call the bank now and they claim i never sent it..."we can't confirm reciept of payment"....how much do i owe?  "we can't confirm or deny any amount owing."

The reason you received the check back from Allied was because the CURE program requires that payments be made with certified payments. Also, the CURE colelction program only allows the agencies to recover the arrears ONLY, and then the loans are returned to the bank.

RBC wouldnt talk to you because Allied is the third-party recovery agent and they do not interfere with what their hired help has in store for overdue clients.

When your loan goes to another third-party for full recovery, the bank behaves the same way when you contact them. They play dumb and give you the run around.

All the best.

Yeah, I understand all that now...but at the time, Allied was calling me a liar (because I claimed I didn't receive notice from them).  I wouldn't have sent payments to RBC if I knew what was up.  It was when I called RBC to ask why they cashed one cheque and not the other that I found out I was in collections. (1st call - they claimed I never sent it. 2nd call - they said they "lost it" 3rd call - they were not permitted to speak with me because I was in collections)
go figure!!
