This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

In 2002, I was forced into bankruptcy, and lost my fledgling business and everything else, including all my RSPs. My understanding was that everything had been swept up in the bankruptcy. However, following on that, I became very ill, and was on disability for 18 months. When I recovered enough to do anything much, I started trying to find work, which was not very successful, and I finally went to live in the UK. At last, after two years here, I am *just* getting on my feet. I am now getting very, very close to retirement age, as well, so I am trying to do my best to get something organised for that.

Now, out of the blue, nearly five years after I was discharged, these ARC people come out of nowhere and tell me that I owe the Federal government $30,000! I'm stunned and horrified.

The woman was rude and implied that I had gone away to 'cheat' and 'hide' and that I couldn't have been allowed to come to the UK if I had been 'truthful', so I must be 'hiding something'. Shocked

I am worried and upset and I don't understand how they came up with this. Are they *really* associated with the Federal government, or did they just buy up some papers and they are now saying I have a debt, to see if I will pay it?

I have already been through so much trauma with this bankruptcy. This was pretty much the last straw. I just couldn't deal with her and her attitude and her insinuations, so I just told her that they should come and get me.

Can they? If they can't, what *can* they do? Can they take the only bank account I have left there (which is an account that I share with my two kids and they use for paying their rent with, so it is an important one)?  I definitely don't want my children swept up in this.

These third-parties train collectors to believe that people who owe money are cheaters of the system. THis is why they say stuff like this. It is very counter-productive. However, the collection industry would argue because this behavior and methodology earns them $180 million dollars per year from the government of Canada.

So, it is counter-productive to the borrowing community becuase of the stress and imapct on people socially and emotionally, but by doing business this way, it earns the collection agencies oodles of money - to beat people up. Do you need help? If so, I can slve this one for easy enough

Yes, I need to know what is going on and what my obligations really are. Are you a professional in this line? What are your fees, etc? If more appropriate, we can take this offline--let me know what the usual procedure is. Thank you!

Thanks, the time zones and the holiday might play a little havoc with a phone call, but I will mail you. My daughter is also sending me some stuff they apparently sent to our old house.
