This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

My apologies Islander. I was unclear with what your message represented. When something is read a certain way - or written a certain way... it can make anyone go hmmmmmmmm.....

I have alot of compassion towards you and what you have been through, Islander. I just don't like the fact that hatred is something that a man with intelligence, decency, humor, intellect, (and the list goes on) such as yourself feels that hatred is one of the things that you hold sacred.

Here is something about debt matters that many people do not come to terms with and I learned this a long time ago while I was conducting a study on how debt issues and crisis affects people.

In Layman's terms, when people subject themselves to debt to satisfy "need" or I like to use the term "necessity"; they tend to not look at what the potential dangers are that may arise in the future - or know how to avoid these hurdles when or if they arise ( "Personal Risk Assessment").

So, let's relate this analysis to Karl. He ventured into debt due to the "need" for "life establishment". It is a common practice. Karl was not prepared for the potential of future problems which, in his case, it is the "need" to be with family due to unrelated crisis - and the feeling that he belongs home. If Karl were prepared, he wouldn't have to worry about what his creidtors can or can't do to him, or how he is going to manage to get the heck home and maintain some level of sustainability. It is not rocket science, by any means.

So, again Karl ... Look for a way.. not a way out.

Lastly, Islander, I would LOVE to drop in and visit. I hear it EXTREMELY beautiful over in your neck of the woods. I pray that I may be able to do this some day. I would love to meet you one day, sit on a beach, talk shop, and sip Mint Gelattas (or how ever you spell those things). Maybe we can talk sometime soon and yak shop. Call me anytime!

 Johnny

thanks all for your replys. This is my last post and i will allow others to receive advice.

My debt was created in advance of me getting the phone call to return to Canada. No i didnt put my ticket on my credit card for momof 2 who asked. My c/cards were at the limit before hand. I worked my thankless 30k year job, and had a cheating girlfriend who decided to rip me off before she left. So debt had started in Aus, but i was just managing to keep my head above the water. Then i had to come back to Canada in a hurry.

I do realise Canadian Student Loan system is not forgiving sometimes. I was young and decided i wanted to be the next picasso and therefore did a "Fine Arts" Degree - i never made money at art and found myself jobless and hungry too in Vancouver. I met a girl and moved to Australia. I had no work skills and started working as a telemarketer to pay rent, monthly bills, and this damn Canadian Student Loan for a degree that was pratically useless. So its interesting to hear you give people a big lick (Islander )for escaping overseas from their awful S/Loans - when there are people like myself who struggled for years to finally pay this off. I could have lived much better off if i had only spoken to you first!!! Plus, I didnt even get any amazing job from my education - therefore have to go back as a mature age student and do it all over again. So I have walked in the shoes of some of these people and dont want to be judged.

I know everyone has a story to tell. Just remember, if i had preplanned this event i could have done a better job. I just want to do the right thing and i will try my best.

Thanks again...signing off. Karl.

Okay, Karl. Sorry if I was unduly harsh on you. And for the record? I too, paid off my student loan. According to the transcripts of my trial, in fact I paid them back 2.3 times. I did not escape to the south Pacific to dodge process servers.

I left the country to escape mental illness, homelessness, drug addiction and the memories that surrounded the murder of the last person I ever thought I would love.

My point was only that it sounded like you racked up debt to fly to Canada (I am sorry about your father, by the way), looked around, liked being here again and decided to stay and spent a bunch more borrowed money to settle in and now wanted help keeping the guys who lent you money away from you.

That, Zafire my friend, would have been considerably different from a current student debt being put into collections simply so the bank could grab the guaranteed portion and then a CA embezzling the payments and destroying a number of lives while persecuting the victim.

Having said all that, I relent. I do not judge. I have more compassion even for the hypothetical debtor in the first scenario I described than I do for the bank. So. Mea Culpa.

Karl, please don't leave because you think I'm a prick. I am and I shouldn't be.

And Johnny, I'll email you when I get a chance. This island IS very beautiful. And exotic beyond your imagination.

What? Me, worry?

Cheers Islander. I know it sounded bad the way i wrote it (Must be my Fine Arts degree coming out of me). Sorry to hear all the sh*t you have been through.

I know the system is cruel...and i also have friends (like many on this site) who couldnt finish their degrees and had to go bankrupt. Its very difficult to try and make ends meet.

I and many others have a long road ahead. I am looking at getting back into school (someday), upgrading the old skills to match employers expectations here in Canada. I will always do my best not to screw anyone over...

I hear your island is beautiful...i may get there one day in the future. Always keep your dreams alive.

Thanks again for all the comments...all is good.  Karl
