Hey Del,
If you are not careful, yes. You just have to know how to work it so that it doesn't.

I'm a single mother of two children my son is severely autistic and I was recently put on ODSP myself for personal reason. in 1997 I applied for and received an osap loan both provincial and fedral not what mean I just know that I keep getting calls and letter from collection agencies wanting a little 14000.00 from for school a school that basically told me if i didn't quit they were going to kick me out because my grade weren't high enough. So I pretty much quit going. Now at the time the school sent most of the student loan back with the exception of 7000.00 but from what I was told by the collection agency that the majority of the money i owe is because of the interest on the loan. Here's the thing I have aside from the day I signed for the loan at the bank never made a payment or ever even acknowledged the loan as mine. Not in writing or in payment. When i was sent papers from either a collection agency or the original bank I would just throw them in the garbage. when they called me I spoke to one man that called me names and threatened me so I stopped answering my phone. Well about a year ago now I answered all from them and the man on the other end of the line ( a collection agent) called me several names and threatened me again, then the agency sent me a letter telling me that they were going to take everything i owned if I didn't sign the piece of paper they sent with the letter and mail it back. I didn't I threw it out too. when i went to do my taxes this year I was told that there was a lien against them and there for the company that usually did my taxes was unable to do them. the loan is over 12 years old i was wondering what i should do? should i send them a payment or should i just ignore it. I did my own taxes and was sent my return and my GST.

No one can answee that one for you, unfortunately. YOu have to make the decision. If you want to try to regain access to your income tax refund then you have to ask them. If you are experiencing hardship then demonstrate it to them. If you need help doing this, The CFW Group here can help you with that. You have to be able to overcome their objection to yours, and that is somewhat difficult for those whoa re making these arguments for themselves. That is because revenue is nmore important that you are. Unfortunately, that is how they think. Otherwise, this sort of thing wouldn't be happening.
If you want help you can seek our assistance, but there are fees - but small.

i am also wondering about this. I have a student loan from well over 10 yrs ago that i have NOT acknowledged. I have done my taxes once in all this time . 1st time was 2006. I just found out now they did hold my taxes that yr but issued me a GST . *i had moved and didnt think i was gettin it* they are now in the process of sending it. I recently called revenue canada to get my t4s and t5s from 2007/08/09 and while i was talking to the lady she said as she sees it..there was no lein on me. I dont get this...All they took from me in the past is 98.00 in 2006 and i havent filed since..where did they lein go?? even the man at H&R was in disbelief it would be gone and would not let me file back yrs today (unless i paid up front )until he can contact revenue Canada on monday to be sure there is no lein..im confused and scared lol. its costing me 300 to file these yrs and im worried. do u think this could mean my loan is stats barred?? and if it is does this mean the lein is lifted or do they still take taxes???

Hi all, I am new here, but have a similar issue. I had my last student loan in 1995 before going on to grad school and paying for it myself. As I understand it, this means that, as far as the student loan people, I ceased being a student (to them) when I stopped using student loans. So that means that my loans are all about 14 years old. I recently received a threatening letter from a law firm that told me I had ten days to contact the Department of Justice or action would be taken against me (I live in Taiwan, by the way). I contacted Ottawa and told them I would like to submit a consumer proposal. Does this then mean that I have ruined my statute of limitations as per the information above? Further, does anyone have any experience with consumer proposals and the Department of Justice? Any answers or advice would be much appreciate. Cheers.

If you engage in insolvency proceedings then you this will disrupt any limitations that restrict the government from recovering the debt. Before you go and do something that could potentially make things even worse for you, consider what options you have. If you want to talk to us and receive assistance you can if you want to become a client. You can also participate on our Facebook nook and that might help you out as well. Just go there and search for The CFW Group Inc. We are there!

I assume that if I become your client, you require payment. Is there any way you can give me an idea of your fees?

Hi all,
I am new here as well so please help me out with this issue. I took a CSL and graduated in 1995. Since then I have not been able to repay and currently am leaving in europe for the past nine years. Now they have got a collection agency in europe to collect the money but I thought after all this time the debt will be wiped from my records? Is there anything I can do based on the statue of limits? Thanks for your help

Fees are a hell of a lot less than what you would be paying for bankruptcy. I can't give you a quote without first assessing your situation. You may need mediation or other related intervention services. However, you may not. Cost depends on what you need done, how much you owe, and how long it will take. Limitation studies are quite extensive and time consuming. The fee for limitation studies ranges from $300.00 to $500.00 on average.

Thank you Johnny for your honest response. I will have to think hard about whether or not I can afford your services. But I do appreciate the advice. Cheers.
