This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Well it has been 6 years now with my 'roommate' and we still don't declare taxes together, share benefits, or do joint bills or accounts. We have no kids and no plans to get married.

I still don't see any obligation on my part to declare to the government what basically boils down to whether or not there is sexual component to our relationship, as truly that is the only thing that separates us from being roommates.

I guess they should really realize that in these times there are 'Friends with benefits' and that shouldnt affect your tax status :)

Ok guys can I please get an update on this situation?

My gf and I have a child together. Born October 2014. She filed income taxes for 2013 single. This year she was on EI.

Shhad her last income tax refund taken because she hasn't paid her loan in years.

If we file common law this year can they touch my refund?

What if she and the child are my dependants?

Does any of this change if I get married?

Interesting, thank you but im still worried taxes will be different. They are already taking her refund. I wish I saw a specific law or ruling on income tax specifically.

My girlfriend has tution credits. If she transfers those to me and I claim her as a dependant they wont somehow construe that as her money im getting and try to withhold my income tax refund?

The government will take her refund, not yours if you file separately.  The government has a noose around the necks of all student loan borrowers. WAY too much power if you ask me.

The other situation is whether or not the private sector caused the default o occur. That being the National Student Loan Service Center. They have committed so many errors that forced borrowers in default over the last couple of decades. If you are one who was victim to an error that they made in handling or managing your file then this needs to be taken into consideration and argued.

So I shouldn't claim her as a dependant? How do I file seperately if we are common law or married?
