This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi there, Long time no see

I was on here some time ago (2007-2008) mostly as my spouse was (and still is) on ODSP and he was being hasrrased by collection agencies. He cannot afford to make any payments on his student loans and his interest relief ran out years ago.  He also does not qualify for disability forgiveness as he became disabled less than 5 years after he left school.

I went to school in July 2008 (on a student loan) and graduated in August 2009. For the last 6 months I have been looking for work but have not yet found a job.

Today I finally got my repayment papers from the NSLSC

Since I have not had a job and have been livig off the spouse's ODSP, I cannot afford to make any payments. My payment is actually pretty good - $117 per months. That wont be any problems WHEN I do get a job. But right now since I dont have a job I cannot pay it.

The application form for RAP is here

It has a question on it for which I URGENTLY NEED an answer.

Is your spouse/partner repaying Canada Student Loans No Yes (full-time or part-time) and/or Provincial Student Loans? If yes, total monthly payment. $_______________________

Technically NO he has NOT been repaying his loans. But they are in collections.

If we say NO to this, are we acknowledging anything regarding his loans?

We cant say yes since he is not making any repayments.

Hoping for a speedy reply

Thank you

Cesca

Cesca.....I would answer 'no'--I don't see how denial of current payment would, in any way, acknowledge his loans. They're not asking if he HAS loans, just if he's making payments. I think you're good to answer 'no' as that is the truth.

Explain this ridiculous disability forgiveness thingy--let's say I graduate in June and get into a car accident that renders me completely immobile (i.e. vegetative) six months later, in December. Are you saying that I would, theoretically speaking, still have to pay my student loans eventhough I can't dress, feed or toilet myself????

Is there anything that our government does that actually BENEFITS people? ANYTHING????

*crickets*

Thank you for that. Much appreciated.

forgiveness is difficult to achieve. The government is hanging on to the threads of everyone's droors concerning student loans. There are just so many peiople who can't pay and they recognize this. However, they take the position that if they can force someone to pay somehow then they will take that route. The system does not take into account financial issues that really do impact one's ability to contribute. THe system is still broken. It has been since the risk-shared program came into play. Banks royally screwed up when they bought into the student loans program. The falacy is that they are making you pay for their own mistakes.

Solve Student Debt specializes in solutions for students and graduates in student loan default, and those at risk of defaulting.
