This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi, this is my first post on this site.  Thank you so much for creating it and to everyone for contributing.

Over the past year I've been steadily re-entering the mainstream economic world from the grey economy.  The next step is taking on my defaulted student loans.  I was last in school in 2003, so that puts me at 5 years.  I've been reading about this 10 year rule to clear a CSL with bankruptcy.  Would this be reset by say an adult highschool math class?  I'm pretty sure it would be reset by a college course, but I haven't seen anything about highschool.

Also, I've heard a number of times about a 7 year rule, where you can go before a judge and argue your case that your student loan is overly burdensome and ask for it to be reduced or even cleared.  Not at all sure of the source, but one person told me about his friend going before a judge (no idea what kind) after 7 years and arguing his case.  He made the point that Pierre Trudeau never payed his student loan, and that was enough for the judge and it was thrown out.   Sounds wonderful, eh?
I almost ran off to the woods!

I went through bankruptcy in 2003. It was 2005 before it was discharged. At the time I went through debt counselling (part of the bankruptcy process) I was told that after I had been out of University for 10 years, I can apply to have my student loans set aside. I was told that all I have to do is contact my bankruptcy trustee to set this in motion. So... after my 10 years was up (this year in March) I called my bankruptcy trustee... she had no idea how to do it, thought I applied directly to the court to ask that my bankruptcy be put aside. Means no payments, ever, and the student loan wiped out... and because I am disabled now, I qualify. So I went down to the local courthouse, and asked for the forms to fill out to apply to the court to have my student loans put aside. Both federal and provincial. The courthouse reception knew nothing of this. Didn't even know which forms would need to be filled out. But, they said if I knew of someone who went through this just take in the copies of the forms they fillled out with their name blacked out, and they would file the same forms for me. I called my bankruptcy trustee back.... She didn't know of anyone who went through this, but sent me to the superintendant of bankruptcy to ask him. He was in court all day so left a message for a call back.... still waiting.... called another bankruptcy company and the lady didn't know what I was talking about but put me through to another lady... who was out... and I left another VM... and still waiting. Yet another lady told me that I have to talk to the student loan companies directly.... that it will take 1 or 2 years.... Cry
So.... the answer is yes, you can have the bankruptcy put aside if you qualify... as to the how of doing it, I am still in the process of finding out, and as I learn more, I will post it for you.

Demonstrate your hardship and make it stick. If you cannot do it yourself, I can help you do it. It is not something that can be posted on the internet. Different strokes for different folks. Each case is unique.

So how do I demonstrate my hardship? And to who? That is the biggest issue.... Who???? Where and who do I go to? I can figure the rest out after that. I am pretty good at solving problems. But, when nobody can tell me the who, what, where and why but yet they know that it can be done, then I get frustrated. Who do I go to? Is it my trustee who should know? Is it the courts? Or is it some obscure little gov't office that nobody knows about? Please tell me the short of it.... email me if you like. Just ask for email addy...

I have just emailed Global news all across canada. I asked for their help in getting this topic... Student Loans and defaulted Student Loans... out to the election parties. If we can all do this, maybe getting it to the media will help???? We need the gov't to step in and make some value based decisions regarding this issue. There are more people in this position than any of us realize. A lot of them are underground. I was myself... until I finally filed my income tax return... 4 years late... Now they know where I live, but not my phone number as it is unlisted.

If we all do something, eventually the problem will get resolved to the point that it won't be as much a burden as it is now..... If everybody emails global and other news sources, surely somebody is going to take a look at this! I hope....

Ok... so you are saying that I have to call the student loans programs both prov and fed and beg them???? Darn... was hoping to never be in contact with those... things.... again.... was hoping that a judge could take care of it... an impartiality and anonymous type being.... Well, if wishes came real, I would be able to fly.... sigh.
