This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hello

Thanks for the welcome Poly.  I'm so proud of you for going to the protest in Ottawa back in '96.  I made a few waves back here in my conservative home town.  I'll never forget the day Harris' reforms came into effect and all the poor, unfortunates hanging around the downtown core were just stunned with disbelief.  I remember thinking (and probably vocalizing)..."why doesn't he just line them all up and shoot them?", because that's in effect what he was trying to do.  And his remark about buying dented tins of tuna to save money sounded like something Basher13 would come up with.

Sorry Basher13, just kidding.  I know you have a preference for heating up cans of dog food in your hotel room, as previously mentioned.

Hurricane Rita is on the way and our problems pale in comparison.  I'm happy to see that buses were provided to evacuate the poor this time.  Did it come as a shock to learn that not every one has a car?  No doubt.  Such a communication gap between rich and poor.  They just don't get it.

I'll be hanging around for a while.  Whether my debt reduction goes through smoothly or not remains to be seen, and whether I can negotiate realistic payments.  There's strength in numbers..

Best Wishes to All

Hippy

basher that is very idealistic in a perfect world everyone would make logical, objective decisions

However, when i went to school i relied on academic advisors from the schools to guide me--

But they are just full of bs and will do anything to keep the money rolling in--same with educators--

My advisors said there are lots of people with criminal records working in this field. In fact, my background would be beneficial. --and that the education would complement my background--lies lies lies

But the bottom line there is a major problem?--why do so many people owe so much money and why cant they pay it back ? seems to me that universities are offering alot of useless crap programs--

Lastly, the gentleman posting this and many on this site are in the same sinking boat--we are left in limbo to get on with our lives to contribute to society due to the barbaric administration of the student loans programs---

Hi Nago,

In the stress and mental health forum - Mark let us know that Basher13 is underage and too young to even have a student loan, so we're just kind of ignoring him for now.....

I started to think this whole thing was a scam when I discovered how much I'd be paying in interest!!  And how much the gov't is paying the bank while I'm on Interest Relief.  The bank's back is covered.  I won't go into the numbers but yeah - something stinks... And then the bankruptcy law changes.  Kind of obvious... And they practically give away those student loans.

The rich get rich...and the poor get poorer.

Those academic counsellors sure do live in the clouds don't they?

.......and then I get a call from one of those temp agencies that lots of companies are using now, taking advantage of the pool of educated, unemployed students desperate to pay off those student loans (or just desperate to put food on the table).  The agency insults me with a job paying $8.35 hrly.  No benefits of course.  What are they thinking?  What is going on?  Years of experience, university education and that's what they offer me?  Not to mention, I've worked for them before earning $10 hrly.  No such thing as a pay raise.  That's less than what I earned pre-university.  I'm disgusted with the whole thing.
