This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I was dealing with NCO last night, armed with a load of information I've gotten from this site (thank you thank you thank you). I have a student loan, lent through Scotiabank, that is in default for $23 000.

I, of course, asked my collector for his full name, which he had no problems giving.  I told him to send me all the information (I requested principle amount, interest accrued, rate of interest and all back payments that I have made) and he said of course!  It all seemed too easy.......

I asked for his license number and he said he didn't have it with him.  I told him that I would not deal with him until I could verify that he was legitimate (he gave me a 1-877 number plus the extension but it ended up being a direct line to him......I called him on why he needed the extension, then, and he had no good reason for me)

I asked for the supervisor so that I could get the license number and was put on hold for about 10 minutes (I had time to kill, didn't mind holding when I knew I had him stumped).  He, not his supervisor, came back on saying that he would supply me with his license number if I called back tomorrow (meaning today).

Then I called the Ministry to verify his full name against licensed collection agents and was told by the lady there that I could not ask for his license number as it was personal information.

Now I am confused, as she works at the ministry (found the # here) and is telling me I cannot ask for that.

Please point me in the right direction
