This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

This is my first post.  This site has been a great source of info for me.

My situation is this:  I started 5 years of college in 1997.  I finally graduated in 2002.  Figure in roughly $10,000 a year, and i owe about $50,000.

Since 2002, the only thing i have done with my loans were applying for interest relief, to my success it worked.

However, i never paid any money whatsoever.  CIBC has been hounding me through agencies but i hear NOTHING from the gov't side of the loans.  Where are they?  And what will happen if i keep ignoring it?

Also, i have recently moved to the United States and will live here permantly.  Am i safe here?

Please help if you can.  Any info is appreciated.

If you owe money, and are able to pay it, and you choose not to, then you are not safe.

If you owe the government money (guaranteed CSL), then you run the risk of enforcement once a limitation issue arises.

If you choose to ignore it, it will all catch up with you.

You can never fail by doing the right thing. However, by doing the wrong thing, you profit nothing more than the shadows of your own actions.

Thanks Johnny for the reply.

Obviously if i had that kind of money i would LOVE to pay my loan back.

I've been unfortunate to have low paying jobs and high cost of living costs since graduating.  Now i am married and I am going through immigration processes in the U.S. and have not been able to work since August, with no end in sight for another couple months.  Even when i do get working down here, how will the little i make be able to make a dent in $50,000?

My new question would be, can "they" go after my wife?

Thank you again, your responses are appreciated.
