This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Not having any viable options(money) and being preyed upon by cons has had a positive (sarcasm folks) impression on my views of humanity. The excellent(still sarcasm folks) help/compassion provided by the government and employers(they may also be my debt collectors) as a whole, has left me with an impression that there are a lot of stupid people out there. Stupid people are often dealt with in the most harsh and cruelest of ways by nature, unfortunately they tend to drag a lot of good people down with them.

So far so good, I placed myself in this debt situation because I believed people needed certain skills in the work environment. I also bought into the notion from my College that the course I was participating in had a demand in the workforce. Its been a year since I graduated and I haven't had any results, the best case scenario would only be able to help me pay off my debt within the next 9 years!

So a College education gets me one dollar more than minimum wage! And to make matters worse they ask for work experience in that field. Some of the better paying position require skills and experience beyond anything a single College diploma can offer, so more debt must be accrued to pay for the additional courses. And you still have no guarantees of a job posting.

How's this for a radical idea, the schools get (cant cash the checks)nothing  from us for tuition or books until your hired in the field of your expertise and earn enough to pay in a timely manner. How many schools do you think would be around then?

Some would say "you get what you pay for", but I dont really care about the price, I care about everything!

I have to stop now, I have more to say but I will put the blame squarely on were it belongs, on the people, because in the long run a significant majority of taxpaying-citizens are too cheap to invest in our own people and  we get exactly what we deserve.

Actually something like that is practiced in England, according to a friend of mine.  Tuition is free till age 19, apparently soon to be raised to 25). Also, Student Loans are not payable until your income is higher than a certain amount.  apparently they are also written off once you reach retirement age.

So, there are other ways of doing things than the way practiced in Canada.  but taxes are higher in england and feul costs are outrageous! So I guess its a tradeoff.

Interesting, as for the tradeoffs you mentioned fuel cost are high in England because, unlike us, they don't have large fossil fuel deposits. The price of gas is offset in our country because we have the potential of being a net exporter of gas/oil. Taxes? They have to support a monarchy, there is lots of old money in Britian that doesnt get touched and they've had the time to develop the loopholes.
Our low taxes are great...if you have money, if your unemployed and in debt you'll most likely stay that way. There are no government agencies around to step in and offer real help. It looks to me like we are starting to emulate an American system that just eats up a lot of potential talent at the expense of helping out the "market economy/american way".

Hey there,

Just joining in for a minute tickedoff ...."our low taxes are great" ??

You probably don't live in Ontario then ...15% for GST and PST (Goods and Sales Tax and Provincial Sales tax).  On large purchases 15 cents on the dollar can really add up.  We pay that much tax for anything we purchase with what's left of our paycheck after those other taxes....federal and provincial combined?  Low incomers do get a GST rebate for now though, although I'm sure Harper will soon have plans for that....

I don't know that we can place the blame on tax-paying citizens either because they don't really control what happens to their tax dollars.  Only who they vote for.  And no one controls the banks and overinflated interest rates that make it impossible for many of us to repay our loans.

Ask yourself do we work for our government or does our government work for us?They pass the laws that allow "common business practices" such as what interest rates to charge. BTW there was a time when it was considered immoral to charge interest on a loan. Those were the days...

And as for taxes, they will vanish around the same time death is abolished. sic."death and taxes", you dont pay as much on food, most heavily taxed items tend to be on consumer goods (things you shouldn't be using?)booze, smokes, gas, clothes, medicine, a home.
