This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

If someone had problems repaying an old loan in Ontario, can they purposefully move to another province to apply for a student loan there with no worries?

Another question, can someone lose their loan for lying about their family situation? What if a person never declares their husband or wife because they are from another country with no papers in Canada?

How would OSAP or other financial aid programs in different provinces investigate this?

If you purposely mis-stated your financial situation on your OSAP application, this would constitute an act of dishonesty, and the loss to the government would be the issuance of the loan monies to you, which would not have occurred, had the dishonest misrepresentation not happened.

It would be investigated by whatever police force happens to be notified, and prosecuted in Ontario.

It would be similar to a "welfare" fraud, where a person collects social assistance and fails to inform the government of the fact that he or she has a spouse in the house, working and earning.

Good luck.

Most provincial student loans  programs have a federal portion and provincial portion.  You would be flagged by the federal system no matter what province you end up in.

Seems what you are proposing is rather shady...   as the previous post, if you misrepresent your information, its fraud.   When you sign the loan documentation there is a clear statement that you are making.

How would they investigate? Simple fact checking when you file your taxes as married when you are claiming on loans that you're single.

Even if you think you wont get caught, its morally wrong to get more money than what should be offered by misrepresenting your situation.
