This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I decided it was finally time to start repayment to my OSAP- i was well aware that it would be in collections- have not paid anything in about a year and a half- two years.

Went to RBC today (my bank) to see what my options are.  We ran a credit report though Trans Union.  My loan came up "Government Student Loans" - $22, 843- Account Transferred- PAID.

Now, obviously I know that my loan did not vanish, but where is it?

At the bottom under "Collections" there is an amount which i did not expect (i thought the who 22 grand would be there, plus some"-  I called the agency Nor Don and after reading many posts here, assumimg that the $1738 is owed to the MTCU-Student Support as i found letters from the Ontario Government for that amount from just under a year ago; but of course they did not answer.

I have not recieved any mail from HRSDC since i moved a year ago.. (they may not know where to find me, i didn't do my income taxes last year)

So I suppose my questions are
1. Why did this show up on my credit report as "PAID"? (The girl at the bank said it looked like i did not owe the government any money and when she asked her manager, she said the same).
2. Should i call Nor Don and pay back the 1738 first?
3. What happens if I don't contact HRSDC.. if it has shown up as paid on my credit report, will it evenutal go away?

I have been searching the interweb for hours and cannot find any cases where this has happened.  It seems most people either get harrassed, or their loans don't show up at all on credit reports... Please help!  Any advise/similar stories would be great for piece of mind.

Depending on when you went to school, there would actually be two or more loans - a  provincial and a federal loan.

The federal loan may have been a guaranteed loan and sent back by the bank to HRSDC and is now owned by the Feds... that's why it might say paid  i.e. the feds paid the loan  but you would actually still owe it to the feds.

The loans may have been with Nordon at one time, but the loans are often transferred between collection agencies.

When did you take out the loans?
BTW, Don't do anything until you get advice from here.

It is an OSAP loan.. Ontario.  "CAN-ONT STUDENT LOAN CDON"? Now i'm confused.  It was opened in Sept 2004, so 2004- 2008.  I was on interest relief, then started paying for a bit... last payment was made probably just over a year and a half ago.

What do I do?  Contact HRSDC?  I don't really have the funds to pay it back, but i wanted to put some form of effort towards it so my credit isn't totally shot to hell.  But now it looks like i paid it on my credit report.. will it eventually go back into collections?

I'm pretty worried about the $1738 though, as it is in the "collections" portion of my report.  But i'm unsure why i would owe the Province of Ontario anything anyways...

If the full loan is indeed with HRSDC are they reasonable with making payback plans?  I obviously don't have 22000 to give to them and i DONT have a lump sum to pay upfront (ie $1000-2000) to start but could pay back a couple hundred a month.. any suggestions on this?  I just want my loan to be under control so i can live like a real person and not be afraid to answer my phone for the rest of my life.

Best bet is to contact the NSLSC - national student loan service center and see what you can to to 'rehabilitate'  your loan.  This usually involves paying outstanding interest and making 6 consecutive payments to get it out of collections.

you probably have a federal loan and a provincial loan... the provincial loan is from the ontario government

It is best to try to work something out with the NSLSC as the collection agencies dont have any incentive to help you...they only want their commission.

" Account transferred or sold" means your federal student loan was transferred to Canada Revenue Agency for collection. They just don't actually report that. You can call Canada Revenue Agency 855-340-2786 to verify if you have a CSL outstasnding.

2. Nordon would have carriage of your Ontario student loan. Your post up there shows to be a routine profile of a CD-ON integrated loan package.

3. If you can pay them, it is best to negotiate arrangements that do not cause you hardship. Collectors are in it to win it, and will do and say lots of stuff to intimidate/scare you into doing what they want you to do.

If you want help, we offer mediation services that address and solve these conundrums.

Best!
