I need help setting up a BC Student Loan Immediately, or me, my pregnant girlfriend will end up homeless.
I dont know how to apply for a loan, I've tried applying myself but they denied it because they considered us no common law and wont cover my girlfriend's expenses. They will only cover mine and expect my parents to cover the majority of our costs (which they wont, they wont give us anything).
We all moved to a new city to go back to school since the courses we needed were not at the local campus, I had saved up over $7000 to go back to school, my girlfriend was to be covered by her own funding program, but she ended up getting denied it after 3 months of kicking us around filling out more forms and information. We since burned through all of my money on rent and bills and are completely out of cash.
Since were in immediate need, we tried applying for income assistance, they considered us common-law and since I'm in full time school, they denied us and told us to get a student loan. My Girlfriend and I have only been living together since January and before moving we both lived with our parents. We tried getting a loan and they denied us and told we were ARENT COMMON LAW, and that my parents would have to help fill it out, due to personal reasons they're not going to help us.
Ive been told that theres a problem with loans like this because they asses your parents income, see that they make alot of money, and expect them to give you money, and give you just a fraction of what you told them you needed, leaving people who dont get any help at all from parents in the hole with a few hundred bucks to cover your entire semesters expenses.
I have no idea what to do, we've been expecting my girlfriends funding to come in so weve been spending all my saved up money on our bills and going to use her funding to cover the rest of our expenses. Were on the verge of having to sell all of our possessions just to cover next months rent so we have time to both find jobs. Since I'm a full time student and shes pregnant, its already pretty difficult for both of us to just instantly get a job. I've always worked hard to get back to school, working for nearly an entire year just to save up. I dont understand why people who try so hard can get no help, and people who dont even care about their schooling get everything handed to them.
We need some help, anything you can direct us to, theres gotta be something were missing that we can use to help us get through a student loan or getting a grant for situations like ours. Ive been in post secondary school for 3 years now, I have an impressive academic GPA (Around 3.6 out of 4.0), and I cant even get any bursaries or scholarships since there wont be any out till next semester. My girlfriend is in her first year, so weve both got alot invested into our education, but cant really do anything with it until we're finished.
Our last resort is me dropping out of studies so we can qualify for income assistance, living in the hole for a year and starting everything over from scratch, but I really hope it doesnt come down to this.
Thank you for reading, any help or pointers to any sources of assistance is greatly appreciated.
