This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hello all,

Here's my story:

I am out of school since 2003, though my financial situation had its ups and downs, I managed to make at least minimal payments on my student loans. This changed when in September 2009 I applied for Repayment Assistance. At the time I was on interest only repayment program because I was unable to pay more, when I received a call from  NSLSC that RA program is available and they advised me to apply. This was in September 21, 2009. I told the agent, who spoke with me that I am on interest only repayment program, which was to expire in October 31, 2009 and my regular payments would resume with both NSLSC and the RBC. I asked the person on the phone if I needed also to reapply for interest only, and she told me "NO" because when I apply , it would take up to 5 business days to process the application and it will adjust my payments to the affordable level, and she was to mail me that application immediately. Indeed, I received the application 2 days later and in September 24  I faxed the application along with all necessary supporting documents to the NSLSC.  In the beginning of October I called them to inquire what was happening to my application and was told that I had some outstanding balance to pay before it could be processed. When I asked  how it could be possible because every month they were taking money from my account automatically and I had absolutely no control over the process, they said they will investigate and contact me. In October 8 I called again and was not able to receive any comprehensive answer from them and my application was still pending. I asked them then to forget about this investigation of theirs and take the required amount from my account and continue with my application. In October 11 I checked my account  and found that the required amount was not taken. I called the NSLCS and asked them what was going on. They told me that I never instructed them to take the money.  I asked to speak to the supervisor because, as I wrote before, my interests only payments were coming to an end and there was not possible any more to reapply, so I knew that full payment is coming at least from the RBC side and I was not able to make it. The NSLCS supervisor told me that the payment will be taken within 3 business days max and then they will take again 5 business days to process the application, so it could be done before October 31. In order not to write  the play of absurd, I will say that from October 31 it took them 45  business days to process the application and it took the interference of my local MP for them to do their job, and even then they took their time without any justification. Needless to say that the RBC took "my right arm and the leg" while my application "was in process" in the NSLCS because I could  not reapply  for Interest Only Payments while my Repayment Assistance application was in process.

Now the NIGHTMARE has returned. In February 17, 2010 I had to reapply. Again I was informed that the application will take only 5 business days to process and I was naive enough to believe that after what I went through with them the last time, the application process would smoothen at least a little.  However, it goes by exactly the same pattern. At first they told me that I have outstanding balance to pay for the month of February. When I asked the how it could be since I was on Repayment Assistance until February 28, 2010, and I have papers from them to prove that, they again told me that they don't know, but informed me again that the application will not be processed  until they "investigate". I asked them not to hold me hostage and take the damn payment because again full payments from RBC are coming. Now this time I was smart enough this time to call RBC and asked them to postpone my March full payment to the end of April in hope that 2.5 months would be enough for NSLSC this time. As of today the application is not processed, I called them yesterday (April 5) and found that although they took the required payment, exactly the amount that is stated in the paper I received from them, I have ANOTHER outstanding balance extra and it is hindering my application again. They also claimed that they did not receive all of my paystubs which I sent and have confirmation. I actually called them many times after I sent them everything just to check if they have it and received "yes" as an answer. They also asked me to provide some papers, which I was in great pains to obtain, and it turned out that they did not need them at all (which I am not sure, because tomorrow they may change their minds, I have to call them every day and every day they give me contradictory information). Now I am really exhausted.  I am the only one who works in my family, my spouse is a student and we have a child to support. I know that in the end of April, if my application is not considered, the RBC will start taking full payments double since I postponed the payment, and that's really going to make my family starve. Do you have any ideas of where do I need to write to stop this abuse. They should be functioning under certain legal acts and should be answerable for what they do to a certain government body, any ideas which one it would be? I really cannot stand talking to those people anymore. I've never in my life seen such a shining parade of irresponsibility  and incompetence. When I think that well- being of my family depends on them, I really want to end my life.

Hi serg208

I also have loans with RBC and had some issueslike this, too. One thing that was screwing up my interest relief was that the NSLSC payment was due on the last day of the month and the RBC one was due on the first of the month. So when I tried to be diligent and make my RBC payment prior to the first of the month when it was due, I would get a call a few days later saying my payment was late--RBC was counting my payment for the month it was made in, not the upcoming one. I had to make a payment before they would approve my IR. Many times you get contradictory information from the people you talk to on the phone.

I've found that many times there is miscommunication (none at all is may seem!) between RBC SL and NSLSC especially when it comes to IR.

I don't know if this helps. Hang in there. Wacko

I feel your pain. If you change the dates in your story, you are telling the situation that I am in right now. It is endlessly frustrating, and I don't know where to go next.

I sent the application on July 2. I had the mysterious outstanding balance that no one can explain. I paid the balance, and now I wait. Every time I call I'm told it will be processed in 24-48 hours. 5 weeks of being told 24-48 hours.

The last 2 times I've called I've spoken with the "ECA" (like super-supervisor or something) and they make all sorts of nice reassurances, but still nothing.

If you figure out a way of getting through all this, let me know.

The only thing I can suggest is that you take control and ask for the issue to be immediately escalated to the next level of management. Otherwise it sits there at the lowest level.

There is an issue escalation team that works to resolve things, but you have to ask for it.

Let us know if this has any effect.
