This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi everyone. I recently spoke to CRA and asked how to have the lien removed off my taxes. They forwarded me to Nordon. The woman there told me that if I pay 245 per month for the next 18 months my loan is cleared and paid in full. I only owe 4400 balance she said. Then she said  when I make the first payment of 245...say now....then in 5-10 days the lien will be removed from my taxes.
I asked for this in writing, very nicely, and she said they cant . They have no forms or standard letters that they can send out to say this is a new erepayment agreement between them and me.
Something doesnt feel right.
Money does grow on trees.

Only the CRA has the ability to remove the lien, not a collection agency. You're right to be skeptical--now you know why they won't put anything in writing.

My hard-learned lesson about dealing with Canada Revenue is pretty simple:  Canada Revenue never admits anything, gives up anything, and never EVER gives up a claim to money.  If there is a lien, it will be there until it's paid - every last penny.  Perhaps I am wrong, but I find this to be a good working assumption when it comes to dealing with them.

I'm not an expert on CRA's policies.  And I don't hate them.  Most CRA personnel with whom I've dealt have been genuinely nice.  Despite that, I can tell you a lot about how I wish I never ran afoul of them, and how hard it is to convince them of anything, no matter how seemingly patently obviously true.  They are a lot more powerful than you think.

A friend of mine had to have her lien removed from ARO for her Ontario Student Loan, had to make 1st pymt online and then send in 6 post-dated checks. She did it and was removed it took about 15 days but then she did her taxes and got it back. CRA told her if she had owed a Canada Student Loan she wouldn't get her lien removed, thank goodness she didn't have that!!!!

Now that's interesting...it never occurred to me that the OSL lien could be removed--I assumed were packaged together like some kind of diabolical duo of debilitating debt.....a little aliteration for you 'cuz I'm feeling whimsical today. Wink

On the more serious--how often does that happen? Where one lien is removed and one is not--not the aliteration thing...

from what i understand liens can be removed on OSL's but not CSL's. I don't understand that either. I know that she said that there was a certain amount she had to pay to get it done.

How do you find out if a tax lien is due to a federal loan or an Ontario loan?

I assume you call CRA and ask?

I have a lien so I just stopped filing my taxes. I have accumulated about $5000 in refunds. My Ontario student loans are about $11-12k so my plan was to just give them $6-7k plus my refund and be done with it but I would like to confirm that the refund money will go to my Ontario student loans and not the Federal loans.

Also, my federal loans should now be stat barred. Does that mean that CRA won't put a lien for the CSL after the Ontario loans are paid?

I actually called the National Student Loans Service Centre today about this.  I just filed my income tax last week, and am elibigle for a fairly large refund, but I have a lien and so my refunds have been directed to my Federal loan for the last few years.

As I have been unemployed for the last few months I wanted to find out if they could make an exception to the lien this year.  I was transferred to some other office and she told me to contact Collect Corp, which is the agency handling my (delinquent Big smile) account.

I found this surprising so I told her "I really doubt a collection agency is going to do anything such as this for me", but she said if I explain my situation they would probably be able to help.  She said that yes, of course Collect Corp is a private/third party company, but that they are mandated by the Federal Government in terms of certain policies.

So anyway I haven't called them yet but I will post about the outcome soon.  I'm not really too hopeful about it to be honest, but it's worth a try I guess. Smile

I called that # 1 866 336 7565 and they sent me a Financial Questionaire, which I need to fill out and send back to an office in Gatineau, Quebec.  The guy on the phone said it would allow me to apply to have a PARTIAL amount of my income tax refund returned to me.

So I would advise anyone who has had their tax refund diverted, and who is not currently employed or is experiencing financial hardship to call that #.
