Topic: Doing the Legal Stuff Myself Posted: 06/November/2008 at 9:10am |

I was discharged from bk in 2005. I am wanting to have my now dischargable SL included in that bankruptcy.
I called a lawyer and she wanted $2500 to do it.
So I called the court, got a sample of what i needed to do.
It cost me less than $1 for the paper, 26.50 for a notory, 15.00 for registered mail, and $10 court fee.
It took my about three hours of my time. Good investment.
I'll let you how it turns out.

Could you elaborate on what it is you're doing? I was discharged in 2006, and if there's any way I can have at least some of my SLs included, I'd just giggle with school-girlish glee and delight.

hey DB1972, I have been trying to find a way to get help with my outstanding loan balance, since being injured 4yrs ago and unable to work it has become impossible to deal with loan repayment. It sounds like you have found a way, what I was needing is a little more precise info or direction to get this ball rolling. If you can offer me anything more please reply to my email.
Thank you

Hi there,
I posted exactly how i did it within another post on this forum (i think). It was not the easiest to do. I just never understood how if you have no money to pay the loans, how can you pay a lawyer to represent you? I understand that it is tough to do the 'lawyering' yourself, especially if the creditors object to your discharge b/c then you are going against lawyers. I just was lucky, no lawyers showed up from the other side!
If you can't find it, let me know. it's imposible to share email addresses on here. which is good, it keeps things anonymous since much of these discussions are 'delicate'.

You didn't owe the government, that is why it was easier. You certainly did a good job though. If the government has coins owed to them, they always look out for their best interest, even if what they do is not in your best interest. Funny how that works, huh?

Unfortunately I may have to do it myself as well.. I haven't found a trustee that will touch people who are on provincial income assistance. I do not see how even IF I was to have a good period that I was able to work for a period of time how I could pay the $1130 per month that they want.
I know that if I am able to work chances are it will be under 6 months before I have a relapse.. But with this debt above my head I'm afraid to try. I doubt I'd get a job paying over $10 per hour, trying to support 3 people on that wage is incredibly difficult. I am also facing the possibility I may have to move, and rent for a 3 bedroom is around $1000, and a 2 bedroom is $900. These are substandard housing too.. and due to issues of myself and one of my children we really require a 3 bedroom unit (I also require access to a washer and dryer I need to do on average 2 loads of laundry per day).
If I could just find a way to get rid of this burden... it has now been 5 1/2 years since my last day of class.
I am going to try the federal disability program, but I don't have high hopes of acceptance.
