This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi all,

Is there anyone who is having a difficult time with this agency and a collector in particular named Mr. Rahman (pronounced Ray-mon)? I have received many calls form people who have been contacted by him, and some of things this collector says to people is quite alarming. He also slanders any groups out there that can help you cope with student debt problems.

It would be a good idea to expose this sort of stuff.

I have just gotten off the phone for the 3rd time with Mr. Rahman, which is why I am looking here for help.  He has threatened to garnishee 20% of my wages and charge me legal fees to collect repayment.  I have offered him post-dated cheques and monthly payments but he tells me that it is "too late" for them to accept payments and I need to get a finance loan at 35% interest to repay the full debt at once.  I have a house and family to support and 20% of my wages could prove financially devastating for me.  Can he do this ????  I called directly to the federal government to ask them for help and they told me that they would accept payments and that collections would be notified of this, but Mr. Rahman insists that the government is "clueless" and must have "misunderstood what I was asking them to do."  Can someone PLEASE help me with a little peace of mind ????

He is collecting for the Royal Bank student loans program, not CSL. Collectors try to manipulate borrowers into finding money, even if it means putting you at risk of further financial crisis. Approaching a high interest lending institution is certainly not a good move. I have listened to his method of collecting debt, and it is very alarming. He also likes to bash me personally - and The CFW Group. He is a piece of work.

If you want some help, I can help you.

More specifically, I called the Federal Governmnet directly today, and they worked out an arrangement where I can pay $450 a month and I was told that they would contact collections and advise them of this.  Still, I received another call from Mr. Rahman telling me that the Government would have no idea of this loan and that they must have misunderstood me.  He told me that it was the "RISK PORTION" of my loan that he was collecting and that the government wanted nothing to do with this portion which is why he was collecting it.  I asked him if what he was telling me was that once he collected the money from me, he could keep it because the government wouldn't want it ???  At this he got furious and hung up on me, only to call me back 5 minutes later stating that we had "been cut off."  My biggest worry is that his threat of garnishing my wages may be valid, and that if I do get garnisheed, will I still have to pay the Government the $450 a month that we agreed on today ????  Lastly .... what is he talking about in telling me that he is collecting the "RISK PORTION of my loan ?????  Thanks so much for all your help ... this guy had me FUMING tonight !!!!  Please provide a phone number where I can reach you ... and by chance are you available for call now ????

That is because he is not collecting for the federal government. He is collecting for Royal Bank student loan (risk portion). This is the amount that the government does not guarantee. There are three collectors that I am aware of that collect for Royal Bank at Nordon. Mr. Rockin Rahman is one of them. I believe the other two are Mrs. Pasani and Mrs. McVicar (sp?).

The problem with the old student loan set up is that the loans split in 3 even 4 directions. Most people have no cue where what is where who is who. Keep your eyes on this collector and document everything he tells you. Your payment to the CSLp is high, and other collectors will try to cutin on that by telling you that you have to pay the equivalent, of not more to them "over and above" the Crown debt. If this becomes too overwhelming for you, call on me and I will help you out.
