This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Just got off the phone with a darling Collect Com manager-type creature. I spoke to him in June and he was a prick. Spoke again in September and he was decent. He's back to his old self again.

He went on quite the rant this morning, so I decided to just let it go. Told me I'm a terrible person and that I'm trying to run and hide and stall on paying my debts. Said that back when he went to school, it was known that if you take a loan, you must pay it back, and on and on. I suspect that when he went to school, if he even went, mommy and daddy paid for it, so he never knew the student loan side of things in the first place.

He's mad about the contact info or, more accurately, the lack of contact info that they have for me. All they have is my address and he wants a phone number, which I'm not willing to give out. Gee, I wonder why. He seems like such a nice guy. Wouldn't we all like a Monday morning phone call from him?

He complained about the financial sheet that I didn't fill out back in the spring. I wrote in my name, address and birthday, which is all information they already had, but nothing new that they wanted. Lack of cooperation, trying to stall, trying to avoid them, etc. He started asking me the financial questions on the phone. I said I'd fill out a sheet if it was sent, but I wouldn't do it over the phone. Ah, so I'm now admitting that I refuse to cooperate.

I stopped my July and August payments and he's not happy about that either. I told him that no work in the summer means no money to make payments. He says it's not his problem, it's mine, then asked what I was going to do to "recover those payments". I said I'd continue making monthly payments, but I don't have anything extra to give right now.

He managed to confuse me too. First he said he doesn't care about me or anything that's going on in my life. All that matters to him is that I pay this debt off. Later he said that Collect Com is trying to help me by letting me make payments. They're doing me a favor by holding off the government and making it so they don't sue me. Then he went back to not caring.

He concluded his little spiel by saying that since I wasn't willing to cooperate with him, he would refer my file back to the government and recommend legal action.

I think I pissed him off by staying calm. During the pauses in his rant, there were a few seconds of silence. I know he was waiting, just expecting me to jump in and be nasty right back. There were so many things I wanted to say and points I wanted to make, but I bit my tongue. I knew arguing would go nowhere productive. I can tell when people are trying to get a reaction out of me. It goes with teaching teenagers, I think. Teaching teenagers also means I deal with drama queens every day.

All this from what was supposed to be a simple phone call to ask for statements of account and a paid in full letter (one loan was paid in May, I owe about $6000 on the other).

He says the paid in full letter was sent 4 weeks ago, the day after I asked him for it. Several times in the year that Collect Com has had my file, I've not received things from them. This is just the latest. He says he'll send it again, but this is the last time. If it doesn't show up this time (and I doubt it will, as he probably won't send it), I have to provide him a fax number to send it to.

The first thing I didn't get was the letter they claim to have sent last November to tell me that they had my file in the first place. He blames the mail. I blame them for not sending it. When stuff is sent from Toronto, I get it in a week or less.

And he says those statements of account aren't coming either. Apparently it's another stall tactic that I'm using, never mind that the payments have been going through as I'm fighting to get statements. He's not here to send me pieces of paper whenever I want something. They're not here to cater to me and it costs them too much time and money to go through crap like that for me. I say that's a pretty inefficiently run office if it costs that much.

I'm interested to see what happens next. I don't think there will be anything, as I have been making payments of more than 3% of what I owe each month (when I had money to make payments at all).

Any comments?

Well, turns out that lovely conversation actually got me a paid in full letter after all. It's about time too. I've been on their case since May. The letter arrived in an open envelope that looked like it was never sealed in the first place. It was also unsigned and had no names on it at all, just the line "yours sincerely, collection unit ext 206". However, it's a paid in full letter. One loan left to go.
