This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

The Royal Bank lost my debt reduction papers which were filed as of June/1st. I called them in the middle of June/early July/and Mid August. All times I was told an investigation was going to be started and to call back in two weeks. Today I was told I should have called back at the end of July and somehow THAT would solved these issues.
The investigation just came through and RB reports that they "never recieved DR papers from me in that building" Whatever the hell that means. I guess the lady at the branch must have ate them instead of sending them off to "the building".
I am 6 days shy of being 90 days overdue and those people let me know there is now way they can process the information even if I got the new papers tomorrow.
Basically I am screwed unless I can come up with 1100 in interest or the next payment of 700 (which of course I cannot).
Collections here I come
I can feel the fear rising in my throat.

Hunter2,

Did you happen to keep any copies of your DR papers that were filed??  This would STEAM me as much as it does you Hunter2!!!  There is no way you should be held responsible for this error...and be sent to collections because of it.

As much as you shouldn't have to try and correct this, there has got to be someone higher up that you can talk to about this....and have any potential collection activity halted!  Look into it more Hunter2....keep making calls....THIS IS NOT YOUR DOING OR FAULT....DON'T LAY DOWN AND LET IT HAPPEN....WE ARE BEHIND YOU!!!!!!!!!

Yes I do have copies. I guess it has the dates on them that they were filled out but I did not send the letter via registered mail I dropped it off at the damn branch.
They are mailing me out another form and I will fax the photocopy I made of the DR application to them along with the new form that has to have the last 3 months of no pay on it
Thanks kwelmm and silence2long its nice to know you guys are behind me. I talked to a "supervisor" yesterday and was told "government regulations dictate that its done this way if you have an issue with it call them"
I feel sort of clinical about this...like I am watching it happen to someone else. Everything anyone has said on this forum about the way these cretins try to pin it on us is so absolutely correct. That is the game...make it our fault...make it default so at least they get "some" ,money back.
Its disgusting.

You GO girl!! (assuming here you are a girl......if not..thats ok too...hehe)

Keep us updated...I sure would like to know how this turns out, Hunter2...

Thanks kwelmm...I am a girl..and I will start calling today and see if I cannot get someone a little more empathetic on the phone than their credit management reps.
Maybe I should try DR directly and see if I cannot get someone to take the file and fax my information directly to them?
I know it sounds silly but in some ways I feel its "fate" for it to go to collections its like all the fight has been sapped out of me and I do not know if I care anymore.

Hunter2... it is so easy to feel like you don't care anymore... maybe fate is that you beat them at their own game.... I want nothing more than for you to show this system you are smarter than them !!

Please do not give up Hunter2...... not now !!  You DO NOT WANT THIS IN COLLECTIONS.... not now... not ever !!!  Keep at it... make them listen to you... you are doing it right and they have to rectify this.

GO GIRL GO........ Be our poster kid !!!!  We are routing for you.

I'm saying a prayer for you..... make them listen... even if it takes camping out on their door step !!!  DO IT !!!  SCREAM IF YOU HAVE TOO !!!  The squeaky wheel does get the grease.... this is your life, dont let them *uck with you !!!

Hi Hunter,

Sorry to hear of your problems!

You really bring home the message that none of the SOB's handling student loans can be trusted. They work under the principle of CYOA (cover your own ass). If any of them make a mistake be assured that you will be forgotten, your paper work will be lost, what ever it takes to protect themselves. For this reason, the student will always be the one at fault. It can't be any other way as "they" representing the establishment can never be wrong, it's not in their best interest..  Very sad indeed but over all the truth.

So what is the best iron clad ways to get documentation to them, in a way that they can't say it wasn't received? Even registered mail is not proof positive, they could still claim the envelope was empty or had the wrong papers.. Even a fax will not be proof as they could still deny receiving it.. And.. remember, nothing said on the phone means a blinking thing. So if they tell you on the phone that they received your documents it proves nothing, tomorrow they can deny ever talking to you. It looks like one needs a lawyer, minister, priest, someone who's word/reputation would not be question. (not a relative as it is considered they would lie for you) This person could witness the documents you send or even deliver in person and swear out an affidavit to the fact. They would have to see the envelope mailed, fax sent or documents hand delivered.. Maybe then a person would have proof positive that you did sent the documents and on time..

This sounds like a lot of trouble, extra time and even expense for people who can least afford it..  What can really be done to protect one's self from the cheating and lying that has put so many of in such a bad situation? We can keep hoping that someone reading these posts and here our crys for help! Things like this would never happen to people with money.. It' only happens because it's so easy to prey on the poor who can afford to defend themselves!!

Sorry for the rambling but people new to this should to be warned that they need to do what ever is necessary to protect themselves and not to blindly believe in the system. In order to protect ourselves we too have to practice "CYOA".

Don't give in.. keep fighting.. we're definitely with you!

Casey . .

Sorry, to here this

But its pretty common-

I was 180 days overdue and RBC told me not to apply

I applied 13 times-each time a different reason (:

But i persevered and i got 10k off csl and my other loan of 12k was fully paid by BC

Apparantly, we are the test pilots of this program so keep harassing em till you get it

Wow...you guys are really supportive Thank You all so much.
I am tentatively optimistic.
I called back and got a different credit recovery agent today....and...she "said" she was going to "skip a payment" on my federal loans thus bringing me down to 60 days overdue instead of 90. That window gives me time to fax in my information(with the photocopy of the last attempt dropped off at the branch)....directly to a private fax(?) and for them to process before I go 90 days overdue.
I cried..no joke blubbering on the phone like a doorknob. So I will keep everyone updated here...somehow not totally sure I believe it but we shall see.

Ok...so it is now February 20th 2006. Today I got a letter from the Royal stating that I owed them 640 as of Feb. 1st and that I had to make arrangements blah blah blah.

This is the first indication I have had..ever......that my debt reduction was approved. And it was. Only they forgot to send me out any notice whatsover. My last recorded call to them was at the end of november 2005 when I was told that it was still being "reviewed" and i would recieve notice. The csr told me today i was approved dec 1st 2005...nice of them to let me know.

So from start to finish my DR took eight months. In that time the interest that has accrued is app 4000. Lucky me....8000 off and 4000 added on in interest so now instead of 50 000 its 46 000.Yayyyyyyyy. Tried to find out EXACTLY how to go about ensuring the 25 dollar payment a month was being made so as to keep it in play for the next round of dr and was told to take 25 dollars a month to a BRANCH.....lovely. I will try back again tomorrow after I wrap my brain around it.
Also now I am receiving phone calls from my provincial collections. Very reasonable do far but I am also unemployed and searching for fulltime so what can they do?????.....

I'm starting to feel a bit sick myself....just called for a Canada Debt Reduction app so that I could at least have a look at it.  Why not?  The Ontario DR app is online.  I was told to wait until May as it hasn't been 5 years since I graduated.  My IR runs out April 30.  So okay...when I asked how long the DR takes to process - she told me 5 days.  After reading your post Hunter, I'm having my doubts.

My income has changed too so I am expecting a huge problem with that.  Also, I will soon get paid more 'in lieu of benefits' which would normally be good news as my dentist, optometrist, medication etc. is costing me a fortune.  That should not be included as income, but probably will be.

Nothing about any of this is fair....I can't imagine that anyone really expected to be paying so much in interest.  When you're into the books, classes, essays, exams....who's reading the fine print and working out the interest and mthly payments on their student loans?  None of the dreamers I've known.

It's been assumed that no one would target students, that a student loan would be easier to pay back than a mortgage with a much lower rate of interest.  It's just a piece of paper after all.  You can't live in it, eat it, drive it, wear it, or even smoke it.

Just a few more months to go....

Now I'm really feeling sick.....

Got off the computer and found out there's 3 saved phone messages for me...CIBC Student Loan Centre - 3 in one day!  Lucky me.  So the Interest Relief hasn't even gone through yet...didn't make the '90 day window' .  And the reason for that is - it took THEM over 2 months to send me the 'Revised Ontario Loan Document' that I had to sign and return.  And I had to make about 15 calls until finally someone sent me the right one.  When I explained this to 'Cassandra'...who once again kept repeating 'I understand' .. she said that it was too bad I hadn't spoken with her back then.  And denied it when I told her that I had.  Other than the ridiculous amount of interest I'm expected to pay, what really bothers me, is being treated like I'm an idiot.  She said 'there's no notes from me on your account'....exactly.  Probably no notes from the other 14 csr's I spoke with either...and probably no notes from this evenings conversation.  Who do you complain to?  They say what they want, do what they want, and we're just supposed to suck it up apparently.

hope your not talking to the bank csr they dont handle the dr the gov does so deal with them directly if you havent

Just keep your loans from defaulting while you are waiting for approval

And you should have been bugging the gov--daily if you have too or at least 2 times a week--

usually if you pay what they want you too then they push it along faster...its a major game for them

what can prov do ? just not approve dr

Dont listen to the bank they are liars

So sorry to hear that
Keep calling the CIBC back until you get someone helpful(perhaps ask for a supervisor) because despite what they say they actually DO have the power to help. Keep trying back until you get someone who can help you...it is another fulltime job to get this approved(totally unfair!)

When Royal lost my first round of DR papers the loan was within a hair of defaulting. I called back and got a sympathetic CSR who "skipped" the loan payment for one month thus giving me 30 days to get the papers in. If she had not done that the loan would have defaulted despite PROOF of the original papers because they had been photocopied!!!

5 days hmmm.. Maybe the CIBC is WAY quicker than the royal because from submittance of DR application to approval it took 6 months(even from second date of app. of sept 1st it STILL took 3 months and even then no one let me know until February 20th!) That income change is likely to cause issues but perhaps as part of your expenses you can document your medical output and send it in.

Funny thing about SL's is that life changes on a dime. I fully expected to go on to grad school, had the grades, loved the work, and thought that I could live like a student while I was paying back the debt then my daughter and I would be able to look at a house together once the debt was paid down ect..I was so pumped..

But it did not work out due to family situation and the fact I could not leave the province(applied to both UofR and UofS and did not get in to either!!) So in my particular situation the question I ask is how do you pay off 100 000 of debt, accruing approximately 1000 of interest a MONTH with a BA in English and Psych?

I apply for three or four jobs that would make it affordable for me to work(I set that bar at 30 000 a year and up because in addition to SL there would be 600 a month in child care) I am still seeing nothing back. Sl has wrecked my credit rating and so any companies that run credit checks comes back that I am unreliable in that regard...which cannot help in job quests!I am either over qualified or under experienced. Its brutal out here! If the government would just give me chance, stop the interest, set reasonable, income contingent payments, offer me a JOB.....anything would help.

As it is, unless something helpful is implemented or I get that 60 000 dollar a year job so I can afford the ever increasing payments, I am fully expecting to make an application for bankruptcy and accept whatever terms the judge sets. From what I have read they are FAR more fair minded than the government suits and act within the reality of a given situation. i Have almost thought about doing it now before the interest accruing raises the amount I owe to 150 000!!

Nago thats a good idea with the gov't but the royal would not even give me a number to call...said they had to deal directly with them and in turn I had to deal with the Royal! Interesting.....perhaps on my next round I will try.
