This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi All,

I just received a call from one of my creditors saying that they are going to pursue legal action with my file... I could really use some advise.

The call itself was actually a little funny - the rep (Victor Davidos) advised me of their plans and it was obvious that he expected some theatrics from me. I just calmly reminded him that he and my other creditors were receiving the same regular (recently increased, by the way [but not hugely so]) monthly payments from me and that there was nothing more to offer. He reiterated their plans and, again calmly, I said that they had to do what they felt they had to do. I could tell that I took the wind right out of his sails!

In the mean time, my heart is pounding and I'm starting to panic on the inside!!

So... the creditor I'm dealing with is Alliance One and they hold my Canada Student Loan. Could this be a bluff on their part or is this really the action they want to take? If they are pursuing things legally, should I have a lawyer (can't afford that!)? Should I call them back and speak to his supervisor? I was thinking that if I spoke to this person that I could make it clear that if they pursue this course of action and won a garnishee order (if that's what they're after) I would have no choice but to quit my job - then they'd get nothing from me what so ever.

Why no choice?? I'm a single parent, I live in Vancouver so my rent is high (46% of my monthly salary), my invalid mother lives with me (she has a pension, but does rely somewhat on me financially [I pay the rent, she purchases her own food]) - then there are all the other costs in life, including my monthly creditor/loan payments.

Anyway... I'm rambling here... what do you suggest I do? Please answer soon!!

You know, I can tell you how to counter these issues. However, everytime you throw up resistance or an obstacle for the collector, they will continue to throw a different kind of munition at you. This will go on for a long time and cost both of us alot of time and money.

I can eliminate the risk  - and patch things up for you which is less time consumeing and costly to both of us. You see, it will take you months to get one step ahead of the problem by simply relaying back and forth the "he said- she said" stuff. Believe me when I say this because there are people here who try this and they have been going forward - then backward with collectors... and ultimately line dancing with disaster because of it.

Here is what you need to do ... Live first, but do not neglect the issue involving your student loan crisis. It can be easily controlled and remedied when I become involved, but for you to beat the odds and solve the crisis, you would have to have numerous years of experience and education in that field, you see.

If you want relief, let me know.
