This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi all,

My student loan was sent to collections and for over five months now I have been trying to get hold of the collection agency with no luck, their voicemail asks to leave your info they will call you back in one business day. I have left hundreds of messages and no one has called me back. I called the Scotia bank and explained this and there is nothing they can do?? So they say? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I heard as long as your paying the collectors a monthly payment they cant garnish your wages, is this true?

Thanks

scotiabank is right, they prety much cant do anything for you at this point.  unless you can pay all the arrears you owe and get your loan reinstated, they wont lift a finger to help you.  they will even tell you that they have no idea when the collection agency will call you, so relax, bank some cash and wait for them to call you.  did they notify you in writing that your loan had gone to collections ?  they HAVE to notify you in writing.

once you establish contact with the CA, if you can arrange a monthly payment schedule they HAVE to accept your payments, even if its not the amount they are seeking.  BUT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO ASK FOR MORE MONEY so dont expect the phone calls to stop.  you should enjoy this phone call free time while it lasts because once they start calling you odds are they wont stop.

as long as you are making an effort to pay on your loans, they cannot touch your wages.  to do so they would have to turn your file over to the bank who would send it to the government who would have to sue you to get a judgement against you to garnish your wages.  and this hardly ever happens.
