This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi Johnnie,

I believe I have two statute barred student loans. I finished school in BC in 2000. Since 2001 no payments have been made. The loans are provincial and federal held by RBC. The creditors leave a message on my voicemail every working day. I have told them to stop but they continue. They even call me at work when I tell them not to.

If my loans are statute barred can I initiate actions to stop collection permanently and for the loan to never be revisited? In essence extinguish the loans (fed and prov)?

What do you think?

You can. However, it takes a lot of work. It is something you will need professional help with. Unless you know how.

Sorry avout the name typo. Ihave called the toll free number for CFW group several times - no one picks up. I tried the contact form link several times and it doesn't take you to a contact form.  I have reached your assistant's voice mail and left a message. Still no reply. Do you take clients from BC? And if so how can we connect?

Johnny,
If my loan is stats barred can I initiate this "stop action" and prevent Revenue Canada from seizing my tax return? Don't they require a judgement to continue taking these tax returns thus proving this money is owed?

I think i have something similar with a bit of a twist.  I went to school from 97-02 in SK. Originally my student loan had to go through the royal bank, about halfway through it changed.  So i believe I have a federal student loan with hrdc and a rbc loan. There hasn't been any payments since 2002 maybe 2003.  Neither of them appears on my credit report anymore so I assume they are statute barred?  Is that correct?  Also RBC had an $1000 overdraft on my account and basically contiuned to draw money out of it until it was maxed out, and then charged interest on that amount.  Would the overdrawn account have been merged with the loan or would I have another debt?  The coversations i have had with PIC only seem to mention the loan.  What do you think?

I'd also be interested in learning more about statute barred student loans. I have provincial and federal loans from 1998-2000 held by RBC. They have been sent to collection and I have been contacted every day this past week. Up until now I have never been contacted by creditors (CBB in Vancouver) and they are already trying to negotiate a below parameters settlement so I am wondering what the status of the loan really is.

Collectiona gencies are pursuing barred loans aggressively. They make a large sum of commission on these accounts. The banks pay them up to 50%.

If you want to find out if it is barred and you want me to help you can contact me privately.
