This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I have student loans that I haven't dealt with for a long time, they kept making impossible demands and hounding me, turned me over to collections even though I was paying what I could. That was years ago.

I got a phone call from someone claiming they were trying to deliver mail to me at a very old address (6+ years old, I applied for the loans here, but moved to go to school). They said they worked for a company called newcom and wanted my address, they had mail for me but didn't know who it was from. I was leery so I said I'm moving right away I'll phone them back in 3 weeks with my new address. 5 minutes later someone from another province phones to confirm my date of birth. Someone is going to some trouble to track me down, the only thing I can think is student loans, which should be stats barred very soon if not already.

What consitiutes action on my account? Do I have to know it's in reference to my loans when I communicate with them, or do they just have to get me to acknowledge my identity, in order to prevent being stats barred?

I really don't want to deal with these people again, it was very difficult and I'm very angry with them and the way I was treated. Advice is welcome.

Hi Breaching White.

I think the sentence "deal with them again" has a huge story to it. Am I correct?
Can you provide more info on why you werent able to pay your student loans? I'm assuming you didnt just avoid them or were there extenuating circumstances?

Just want to know, as the policy of this site is quite clear... a little more background on why you werent able to pay and if there's been hardship we'd be happy to help- and it would help set the tone for the rest of the forum...

Hope you find help here if you need it...
