This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

My student loan dates back to 1993.  When the government took over from the bank I didn't sign any forms.  I went into bankruptcy and was discharged in 2002.  Last week I received a call from CollectCorps asking for the full amount of $8500.  I went to order cheques and had planned on paying $100/month.  Today Ms White called back and told me to get a direct payment letter from the bank and fax it to her by Monday of next week for payments of $250.  I went online and found this forum.  After reading many of the comments I need to know how I find out if my loan is statute barred.  Ms White has threatened to turn this back to the government to start litigation if she doesn't hear from me by Monday.  What do I do?

Although I am no expert, I can say with a wee amount
of certainty that insisting on a call back by date is
something that collectors use in order to frighten you
into committing to things you may not be able to
realistically handle.

litigation is a long and drawn out process and
although it does happen, it does not happen over
night. take a deep breath.

Johnny, who you will find here and probably have
already discovered, is the man with the answers on
stuff like that. There may be others here who can
give you a definative answer so hold on and
someone I am sure will come to your aid.

There is a great supportive community here.
Welcome.

etoile has made some excellent points.

im pretty sure your loan is likely stats barred.  depends on how your trustee worked your bankruptcy.  if the CA is in that big of a hurry, she's hiding something.  be very very careful how you proceed here.  do not acknowledge anything in writing, for starters, or you will be screwed as acknowledgement restarts the clock for stats barred.

johnny would likely be the man with all the answers here.  if he doesnt respond to this email in a day or two, email him directly or post a new topic with his name on it.

welcome to the forum

Just don't acknowledge the debt until you're certain one way or the other.

Did you list it as one of your debts when you filed bankruptcy? If so that might constitute a problem. Did you make any payments toward it since 1993 or in any way acknowledge it in writing?

If the answer to all of these is no, then they probably don't have a leg to stand on.
