This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Apparently most of it was RRSP and RRIF transaction information.  (Found this out at the end of the piece) so it might not be where you edulink forms had dissappeared to . .

hard for them to prove it wasn't forms destined for edulinx or other student loan documents if the forms were lost, now isn't it ?  the wrecker said in the article that initially he destroyed the documents, so there would be no proof, and if he did keep even one student loan document there would be a case to have ALL loans with lost forms recalled.  maybe people screwed by cibc and edulinx ( i am not one of them, though) should start calling CIBC and complaining about this, an angry mass has power.  they would have grounds to have their loans removed from collections and reinstated since their blatant screw up is so well documented in the media, at the very lest an apology issued bu CIBC and a good faith adjustment on all outstanding loans might be a good pr move.

mark, this sort of activism is generally your domain.  any chance you could write a letter and get it published where it counts ??

any thoughts ?

In case anyone is interested, that CIBC screw up story made the news here in Jakarta.

It was in one of those little page 2 Odd World sidebars where they give one paragraph quickies about burglars who get caught in ventilator shafts and postmen who die and leave 10 years worth of accumulated mail in their house.

Nice to know CIBC has a world-wide reputation.

Which is about to get worse...This just in from CBC online:

ATM gives customers Canadian Tire money

Last Updated Wed, 01 Dec 2004 18:37:29 EST

MONCTON - A CIBC cash machine started dispensing Canadian Tire money at a mall outside of Moncton, N.B.

Kayla Peters, 16, said she was shocked when she withdrew $60 on Nov. 29. She received two $20 bills and two $2 bills in Canadian Tire money.

"I just stood there for a second wondering what I should do, but then I heard some other people talking about it and it turned out I wasn't the only one."

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce officials say four people have been reimbursed for the mistake.

"It clearly must have come in from maybe some of our business customers who package up their own cash," said Rob McLeod, spokesperson for the bank. "We're still tracking down exactly what the source was."

McLeod says CIBC has confiscated the fake money as part of its investigation.

The ATM spat out 11 Canadian Tire bills in denominations ranging from 10 cents to $2.

"It appears to be a very isolated incident," said McLeod.

It's the second recent embarrassment to involve CIBC. Last week, a junkyard owner in West Virginia revealed he was suing CIBC because it failed to stop faxing him private financial information about its clients.

The bank said it knew about the problem and thought it had been fixed in 2002. CIBC has ordered its employees to stop using the bank's internal fax system to send customer information between offices.

So, in answer to a question posed on another topic, they DO take Canadian Tire money, so I can't see a problem with Monopoly!

Isn't it funny that they want everything we owe them to the penny but they don't even check the money they receive from their "business" customers. Granted....it may be hard to check every dollar they get in but to then put the damn stuff into a bank machine?!?!??
