This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

So this could have been my fault:

my story is that I was one of the lucky ones who was stuck in the bank/CSLP layover.

took loans out with RBC in september 99

took loans out for the next school year 00/01

send out confirmation of enrollement slips for the next 2 years

graduate in '03

couldn't find a job in my field, apply for IR (while paying RBC loans), get denied (unemployed had a serious injury etc), get correspondance in Feb. 04 (consolidation agreement?).

get a good job in May 04

4 days ago my parents get 2 phone calls, I get 1 at work first telling me they are from the royal bank and are acting as a collection agency. hang up.

call Royal bank, they say everything is a-ok

get a call from Rhonda at CBCL about a defaulted student laon from Feb. 02.

freak out, no correspondance from anyone.

get home another call from a Dionne @ 1-866-591-5168

call SDC, NSLC, get no real responce and several different answers to the same questions

want to pay loans off and get it resolved after reading horror stories.

what can i do? what should be my first step? since I have no correspondance to show, how can i go about this?

really really stressed!

Ah. Dionne called me, too. Personally, I'd sit tight until you see some paperwork in your mailbox. It took over a week for me to actually get paperwork, but that darn Dionne called every day....And remember that by law, CAs aren't allowed to call you until they advise you in writing that you owe them money. So sit tight, and tell 'em where to go until you see some proof that you owe them money.

who is dionne from?

I contacted John at CFW, and while it's too late for the IR, i'd like to get it settled and not deal with CA's.

just waiting for the paperwork to come through......hope the power is working as it was in the am....

The Dionne that I heard from was from CBCL. I made the mistake of returning her call from work, and next thing I knew, they were calling me back at work. So be careful.

my parents sent all the student loan info i had. my bank loans are not matching up with the notice of assesments, and my agreement for the CLP has no amount and was not signed by the borrower.

reminder to keep your paperwork in order and read, scrutinize every detail!

I just want the straight facts (dates borrowed, amount etc.)

hopefully the CFW can help me clear this up.

man, every other loan i have is clearer than this!
