This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

OK So here is my situation:
  • I graduated College in 1997
  • Between then and sometime in late 2004 I worked and paid my bills including my student loans
  • In late 2004 Had some Financial difficulty.
  • In the summer of 2005 I did a Consumer Proposal - which I though included ALL of my student loans.
  • In summer of 2010 my Consumer Proposal Finishes and I get Discharge papers
  • Later in Summer of 2010 I pay off what I think is any outstanding Balance on my Student Loan via another Collections Agency and believe I am finally clear of that Monkey on my Back
  • Fast Forward to Last week:
  • I get a phone call from what I believe is a telemarketer. I hang Up.
  • I get a call right back and get a very rude person demanding me to verify my DOB. I hang Up
  • I am annoyed and look up the number. Turns out to be ARO a collections Agency. I decided to send a email asking them not to call.  I send this email to the location manager and the vice president and also inform them of the rudeness of their agent. Thinking they must have the wrong person with the same name.
  • I get a call back on my cell (which I did not provide - they figured it out themselves) from a girl saying she is the Location Manager (The Name Matches), she is much nicer and we talk and she informs me she is trying to collect for the RBC part of the student loan. I tell her I had done a consumer proposal - had paid some more to another collections place after the proposal and that I am all clear. She explains about the risk and guaranteed part of loans, etc...
So to make a long story short I do my research, call the RBC, and it turns out I may owe some money. I am OK with owing the money if true, I wish my trustee had explained things better and if I had known about it I would have taken care of it sooner.

I have asked ARO to provide proof and paper work from RBC that shows the amount. I have explained that if there is an amount owing and if I do take care of it I want some kind of written proof that this is it. That I owe nothing else after this.

So here is my BIG question.... Is there any kind of Form that I can get from either ARO or RBC that would state that after I pay an agreed upon amount I no longer owe anything to them at ALL. MY student loan was with the RBC only and have no other debts.

Basically; I not only want to get this Monkey off my Back I want to stomp the thing into the ground and Bury it. Is there a form they should provide or do I request from RBC or should I get a Lawyer to write something up and get one of their Officials to sign it.

Thanx.

Also, just for my curiosity, I was thinking.

It has been at least three years since my proposal finished, 8 years since it started.
I am guessing that maybe this or another company has contacted me but because they (the collection agency) do such a poor job at communicating who they are and do not follow proper procedure by being honest and stating who they are and exactly what they are calling about and giving me file numbers etc... that there is an argument to be made that a proper attempt has not been made to contact me.

With google I can find someones phone number, address, etc within minutes. Are you telling me there is no way they could have found a proper way to inform me about this supposed debt in 3 years other then the possible occasional deceptive phone call that is mistaken for telemarketing.
