This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi,

Slightly complicated situation, so apologies in advance for the length of the post.

I completed my education at the University of Toronto in June 2010, using OSAP loans. At the time, I was a Permanent Resident in Canada. Soon after, I left to study for another degree in the UK. In the intervening period, I gave up my Canadian PR and no longer hold that status.

Now, due to a mis-communication (and laziness on my part), I have yet to begin repayments for my loans. The loan has now obviously gone to collections. Part of the loan was a federal loan and the other part provincial. I have spoken to the Canada Revenue Agency, and already arranged a repayment plan for the federal loan. As for the provincial loan, it has been passed on to a collections agency, who are suggesting I make the entire repayment in a single lump sum. Is this normally the situation ? I can arrange to pay in installments, but a lump sum might be difficult.

I will also be travelling to Canada in the next couple of weeks on a visit visa. I was assured by the lady at the Canada Revenue Agency that I would face no problems re-entering the country, in spite of my debt. However, the collections agency administering the provincial loan was unable to provide any such guarantees, as it has something to do with crown debt.

Does anyone have any information on this matter ? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

There is no issue with you coming to Canada. The Ontario government can't do anything that you are concerned about.

Hi,

Just had another questions in relation to this situation. Was I required to file tax returns for my loans ? I have never worked in Canada and had no income as such. If so, will that impact upon my ability to return to Canada now on a visit visa ? If it does, are there any corrective measures I can take ?

Sorry about all of the questions, and thanks again for your time.

You can come back to Canada safely. You woud be better served to contact a tax professional to discuss filing responsibilities.
