Topic: how do I stop them from calling me at work Posted: 12/November/2009 at 7:55am |
|
Hi,
as many other people I have student loans that have been in default since 2000. I have been making small payments towards my debt since - monthly, but nothing to offset the interest. Lately an agent from ARC has been calling me at work. I know they are not supposed to do that, but how can I actually make them stop? Does anyone have any ideas?
They have my home phone number and I accept our daily chats at home, but the work calls are really stressing me out. On top of it all, I am on maternity leave right now i.e. am not even working right now - they know it and they keep calling there.
Any help is appreciated

Hi,
What Province are you in?
The consumer laws regulatind debt collectors are provincial laws (slightly different in each province). If you tell us what province you are in, I can send you the link to the consumer laws in your province that regulate what debt collectors are allowed to do

I am in Ontario and my understanding was that as long as the collectors have your home phone number they are not allowed to call you at work.
please send me the link, as I guess I will have to write a formal letter of complaint
thanks

at the top there is a red menu....click on student loan info, then filing a complaint. Check for the Ontario address....
Ask for the collector's provincial license number and tell them you will be filing a complaint for phoning you at work....

I'm not sure how it works in Ontario but here in BC if you write a letter to the collection agency stating that they are not to call you at your work and if you have provided an alternative # by law they can't call your work.

You would have to issue a letter to the agency. However, if the collector demonstrates that he/she cannot reach you during more convenient hours, they may still call you there. It is important to address in such a way whereas there will be no reason for anyone to call you at your place of work.
