This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hello to everyone on the board. I used up all my interest relief so it came time to apply for debt reduction. I put together all the info they needed to document my past 12 months of earnings. Before tax I made about 29,000 in 2007, (post taxes about 23,000 at best) and was getting IR the whole time. Apparently I was making too much to be eligible although I got laid off from job on January and I'm currently getting about 1200.00 a month from EI benefits(documented all of this for them as well).

I've got a Canada loan with RBC of about $18,000 left to pay off with payments of $350.00. So currently I'm looking work(that pays well enough to cope with this, not easy an task thus far) but I've got a payment coming up at the end of the month which I don't have the money for.  Given my low income at the moment it seems that my loan is about to go into arrears and likely to collection, food and rent have to come first so I'm feeling a bit screwed.

I'm frustrated that it has come to this because my initial debt load was nearly 45,000 and since 2002 I've toiled at work doing overtime, sold my belongings, avoided creating rrsp's, buying a home or starting a family to get this debt to where it is at 18k currently. I guess my post is a bit of a venting just to get it off my chest...trying to figure out how to deal with this, should I let it go to collections and take it from there? I'd almost rather just go bankrupt at this point instead of extending the godawful term even further and honestly making interest only payments would be soul destroying and probably not even do-able if I want to eat right.

Thanks for listening and I hope that I can be of some help/support to others on this forum.
