This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Hi all,

Just recently I found out that BC has a permanent disability program that allows the provincial part of of your student loans to be forgiven.

I went to the BC Student Assistance Program website and printed out the application.  It was a one page application asking only for your name, adr., sin.  The only qualification necessary is that you qualify either for cpp disability or provincial disability benefits.  They don't ask what your disability is or what your income is.  I sent off the application and about 4 weeks later I got a letter saying it was approved! The province will now pay the provincial part of my student loan plus interest directly to CIBC.

While it didn't wipe out my student debt entirely, it sure lessened the load.  Now if/when I get my kidney transplant maybe I can return to work and actually be able to make the payments.

It is amazing how differently the provinces handle student loan issues.

Hopefully this post may help other disabled BC residents that are not aware of this program.

Hey justme2007

What kind of proof of your disability did they require?

Hope your kidney transplant went well!!
Thanks,

I went through the same process a few years back.  The form doesn't even require you to disclose your disability, I just had to get it signed/stamped from my income assistance worker from provincial disability.

I am sure it will not be much different from CPP disability except it may be harder to find someone to fill out the form for you.
