This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I have a wife and four kids and I have about $45-55k in provincial and federal student loans. We just finished paying off my wife's loans that had been in collections for about 10 years (it was only about 4k). While we aren't well off, I have to admit that we're probably doing better than many of the people here; we've been able to keep our heads above the water, provide for our children, and work down some of our credit cards. There are months when the fridge is a little bare, but thank the Lord it works out.

The bad part is that we've nearly exhausted all of our interest relief.

I'm in the same boat as many of you in that when they come to collect, I won't be able to make the minimum monthly payments. I think mine will come up to over $700 per month in 9 1/2 years. I've thought about stretching it out over 15 years, but it only knocks off about $100/month from the monthly totals. I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with re-negotiating loans with the lender. I think I might be able to pay about $100-200 per month, but banks aren't known for being merciful.

If you have exhausted all interest relief then you should be applying for Debt Reduction program!

Then see what your payments will be after that...

It would be best to push DDR if you qualify.Your income and family situation is what counts.

If they refuse you DDR, push revision of terms over the longest term possible.

Reccuring thought for me here.

It's amazing how in order for me to live, I need my terms revised over the longest period possible. However, the government earns more money off me over the longest term possible.

I think I'll be done paying off my loans when the last of our four children has grown up and left the house.
