This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

So we are working with a mortgage broker to set up some financing for our new home.  Luckily, my hubby's beacon was only 1 point off so we qualified.

Thanks to CIBC and their lack of ______________ (just fill in the blank), I have a crappy credit score.  So my mortgage broker suggested that I call CIBC and find out who to talk to.

WELL..  That has been a treat and a half.  After leafing through the phone book, I turned to the internet because golly gee, I am in BC and my loans are in Alberta.  I ended up emailing CIBC to find out what number I should call.

I was emailed back with 2 numbers.  One for Edulinks, and one for the CIBC National Student Loan Center.  After calling both and getting no where, I was directed to some kind of Alberta Collections because I am one of those lucky few that got to go to school before 2000.

After talking with this person from Alberta collections, I was told to call the credit bureau, who in turn told me to call..... Wait for it.....  Take a wild guess........ THE BANK.....

So now I am stuck in a circle.  I left a voicemail message for a person at the bank.  What do I do? I was kind of thinking that if I get no response by tomorrow at noon that I should call at least once a day.

Oh, I should mention that I filled out and sent the interest relief forms 3 times, which of course, were never received by the bank.  I called them numerous times to find out what to do to start paying back, etc, but no one seems to know.  Its like any student loan issued in 1999 and earlier is lost in LAA LAA Land.

Oh isn't the CIBC grand.  I am going through a similar situation with the CIBC and collection people.  I have been wrongly sent to collection and saddled with bad credit by the CIBC also.  Like you I was told that forms I sent to them multiple times were never recieved.  Like you I have been bounced from the National Student Centre to  collection agents back to the Student Centre, then to Customer Care, then to Edulinx, then back to Customer Care...on and on and on....Now my mother is helping me out and apparently my file is being escalated to some manager at the Customer Care....I think they are just bull-s'ing me but we'll see.  If I find a direct number for someone I'll pass it on.  Good Luck.

Just keep records of conversations, ask for agent numbers and names. Diarize things as much as possible. This will prove beneficial on your part.

INTERESTING.....  Be married FINALLY paid off!  When I contacted Edulinx and CIBC I gave them my married name, omitting any other info about myself.  Guess what??  You get replies quicker when you do that!

The downside?  now in stead of me owing about 19,000 it has jumped to over 30 G's!!!!  The lady at CIBC just told me to call the agency holding my loans and arrange to give them that amount....

HELLO???????  Oh yeah, I have 30 G's in my back pocket just itching to be given up.

Did I mention....  My forms for interest relief...  They made it there all right...  FIVE FREAKING MONTHS after I mailed them..  What a complete and utter load of pooey.

So now the bank is retrieving my files.  The person that I talked to is claiming that between November 1999 and February 2000 they left me over 40 voicemail messages.  Which is quite interesting because I moved out of the province in January and TOLD them my new number.  According to my sister that has my old phone number, they still call her!  Interesting seeing as how they called me at my current phone number.

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH Two weeks of complete crap, I have a mortgage closing on Tuesday and I am no where near getting this resolved.

I forgot to mention that I asked them if they could call the credit agency on my behalf to say that I had been in contact with them and to see if I could get it reversed out of the bureau.

She used the words default and write off....  SO.  Maybe I should let this crap ride for a year and then it will be like it never existed!  She basically  told me that after 6 years it would be gone....  HHHHMMMMM  kind of gets you thinking

Best not to think that way. The "lady at the bank" is not necessarily looking out for you best interests either. And chances are, after 6 years of hell, the debts will still be there, despite what you expect.

I know not to think that way, but in the past two weeks I have been bouncing between the credit bureau who won't take my money and Student Loans who won't take my money.

And I think what is going to happen is that when the bank calls me back they are going to try and claim that I didn't do anything on my end, which is not true.

I am more than will to pay it back, but I am not paying $10,000 in interest.  Apparently, that is not something that the bank wants to care about, I have to take that up with collections who says that I need to take it up with the bank.

Oh now its just getting better and better.

I was tried of talking on the phone (and the cordless crapped out), so I sat down and wrote a letter to the credit agency.  I told them that I need a letter from them saying that they would accept my offer to pay them monthly.

GUESS WHAT

Apparently, paying them isn't going to change anything.  thats what this dude told me.  It won't come off my credit report anytime soon especially if I start paying it.  He told me that my only way out is to borrow from a friend.  YEAH all my firends have 30K in their back pockets and they just want to give it to me!

He told me "add the amount to your mortgage".....  What an idiot.  What part of the letter did he miss?  the part that said financing is being completed effective Tuesday?  The part that said that the lender only needs a letter staing that I am making payments.  thats all they want.

The credit services (I use "service" loosely here), said that they cannot issue an acknowledgement of payment because they can't "change the original agreement".

So at this point I am damned if I do and damned if I don't...  Then again....  Money from a friend....  Aren't the politicians supposed to be "your friend"???????

jen

ask your "friend" the CA to lend you the money ...

yes the default will show on yor credit rating for six years.  HOWEVER as cargo just pointed out in another thread, most mortgage brokers will work the deal to their advantage.  if this is the only blip on the radar for you they may overlook it if your spouse has good credit.  all you have to do is show that you are willing to work out a repaument arrangement.  open a seperate bank account to set up a PAP ( pre authorized payment plan) to pay your loan each month.  you then have your bank statement to show your payment history and your willingness to comply with the lender's request.

if you're getting frustrated, i'm certain johnny can help you.  email him and let him tie it all up in a pretty bow for you.  he has a gift in sifting through the crap and making things work.

Thanks!!

It actually ran through my head to tell the w**ker at CIBC to add it to her mortgage because she was the first person to say it.

Here's my next question.  The default will show for 6 years.  Well, it will be six years soon.  So if I start paying on it, will it show for another 6 years?

it will show for six years from the last date of activity.  meaning, each payment you make resets the six years it will take the loan to fall off your credit report.

however, once you have been making payments faithfully ( ie six months on time and of a substantial amount) you can request that your credit report reflects that the account is currently in good standing and is being repayed as agreed.

i would suspect that the original lender has already written off the debt.  your inquiries into the matter may have reset your clock for pursuing stats barred, however.  i would suggest speaking to johnny on this matter, honestly, he's the one who knows the most around here.

keep us posted.

I think that you are right.

when I talked to the bank she did use the word write off, and when I said "well what does that mean", she said "well, you know"....

Maybe I shouldn't have bothered!  Maybe I created my own mess!

See they dont want to say the word defaulted because it initiates them getting screamed at.  Gutless response by them.

After I typed, I checked my notes, she said both write off and default.

So here is the update so far.....

NOTHING.  Nothing at all.

I keep calling two people who tell me nothing and they still say that they are "looking" for my files.

The one keeps saying to let it default, but won't that really screw up my credit rating?

I completely give up.  I am willing to pay a small amount of money a month if I have to, but I am not allowed to.  What am I to do?  I don't have the money to pay someone to take care of this and I am going nowhere on this by myself.   I give in!!  I surrender, look, there's the white flag......

Don't give up!!!!  It sounds like you need to ask to speak to someone other than those dim wits you have been speaking to.    Try to find out who the supervisors are or someone with more clout.  Explain to them your frustration with the other individuals' incompetence....and let them  know you want to pay and sincerely hope there is  someone who is willing to cooperate with  you.

It may do nothing...but it's worth a try!!!!!!!

So I got my file!!!  I have actually had it now for a while but I was too flabbergasted to actually get back page 1.

The opening note states that I didn't show a willingness to pay back my loan...  Hello???  I was in school.  I had no money. They knew that......  Idoits.

Anyway.  The collection agency called me and I now have 7 days to come up with the 30 G's or I am being summoned to court.  Jackasses..  I will bet its because I emailed everyone in the whole freaking country and once Human Resources stuck their nose in, it cheesed off the bank.

Thats okay.  CIBC gave HR the wrong info anyway...  See, they want to sue me, but still don't know which end is up, whats a girl to do?
