This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

That many errors undoubtedly negatively affected your ability to purchase those items. I'd talk to a lwayer. That many mistakes is damn close to negligence and, I suspect, actionable.

Ferren,

I am glad to have the clean up part of the process over. I have promised myself to take a proactive approach from this point on.

The thing about debt and collection for me was that I was so stressed trying to keep up on my day to day issues, that the fact of my future being messed up "credit-wise" was of little concern.

Islander,

I know that the credit issues have caused me significant difficulty when buying my home and my vehicle. I do however have a very busy schedule(three kids, spouse, home, work full time and go to school on the weekends) and have to pick my fights.

It feels like a cop out because I know what they reported on my credit was wrong. I absolutely should sue, but they have had something that I value more than money and that is my time. I will not give these people any more of my time than is required to keep them in line.

I have been down the lawsuit road, that is how I got in this mess in the first place...I wrote about it in my other posts, while I was still in school, my house was being built, builder goes under, is unable to finish house. I sue, it takes years of my time and alot of my money, I eventually win...life in shambles. I just couldn't go there again, I feel physically ill just thinking about it.

I may pass it by a lawyer to see what they say, I did read the story on this site about the award given by the court of 60000.Big smile

God knows I'm not trying to push anyone into litigation! I'm really glad that you got what you were entitled to and you deserve all the peace of mind that comes along with it.

You might have a case there, though. The reporting agancies have a responsibility of due diligence. IF you had the time, energy and desire to lock horns with them, it would be for EVERYONE'S benefit, though. It might just force the credit reporting agancies to clean up their acts and do their jobs with some degree of integrity. It would be an enormous sacrifice on your part, of course, and I'm not suggesting that you owe it to anyone to tilt at windmills.

Of course any judgement you won would be yours as some minor compensation for your efforts....

To be quite honest I would love to take them all on...even if it was for principle only. We'll see...

I knew you were only offering suggestions...on the litigation. If I had the time and energy.

Go for more than principle! Go for principle + interest and punitive damages!
