This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

Ok cross posted this I am new and did not see this thread. Basically I have tried to make arrangements with ARC and they have declined my attempts saying it is not an acceptable amount. 100.00/ month on 6000.00 loan. The person on the telephone basically bullied me and made threatening comments RE; Garnishment of wages and demanding I call my other creditor my Federal loan and tell them that I will be reducing my amount with them and that at XX years old I should have control of my finances. and that is unacceptable that I be paying them so much and hardly any to them, I was just trying to explain my financial situation and now I am totally at a loss of what to do.,

Unfortunately, that is what collectors do and how they behave. They are commission driven so $100.00 payments make them very little money for themselves. Banks and governments that use them don't care too much about you and your situation which adds to the misery of the situation.
Solve Student Debt specializes in solutions for students and graduates in student loan default, and those at risk of defaulting.

First off - don't give them ANY information!!! And secondly - don't let them intimidate you!!! They always demand as much as they can, but at one point, I was giving ARC $50/month. They took it. And this was for a much bigger debt.

Them threatening to go to the Feds to tell them YOU will be paying them less is laughable! They have no rights or authority to control your payments. That's just ridiculous! Do you really think the fed gov't would just sit idly by and agree with you giving them less?! To give it to a debt collector?! Ha!

And ARC has to go to court to garnish your wages, so they are lying about that too, what a surprise. They need a court order first, which means they have to sue you, go to court, get a judgement in their favour so THEN they can then garnish your wages. It is a process, one that starts with suing you. And their lawyers will try to settle it before it goes to court anyways.

Basically - when in doubt, assume they are lying! You do not have to give them ANY information, in fact, the less you do, the better.

My advice - keep paying the Feds, get that loan off your back. Ask ARC if they are refusing your $100/month payment offer and see what they say. If they say yes, get that in writing, or send them a registered letter (keep a copy for yourself) offering the $100/month offer and ask for a written reply. KEEP RECORDS OF EVERYTHING.

Most importantly - don't put up with them treating you like crap. You don't need to take that. Know your consumer rights for wherever you live and hold the collection agencies accountable. Ask for their license #'s, their names, record EVERYTHING if you speak to them - when/what was discussed/time/etc. And watch this show on Marketplace to know you're not alone and that you DO have rights. I have unbelievable horror stories of collection agencies harassing and intimidating people that would make your head spin.
