This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

ok i posted a draft of the letter i am planning on sending in for my attempt to get my loans cancelled - under the disability claims help forum.  i'd love to get some feedback from you guys before i bite the bullet and send it off.  i'm no english major or writer so i need all the help i can get.

i'm thinking of adding something about how people who default on their loans should not be punished for their inability to pay by being further denied any possible assistance in settling their debt, but still fighting myself over the wording...

thanks in advance

WELLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!

I have just checked my post and I was very happy to see that many people had replied from first glance.  Now, at the time I was selfish and I did think.  WOW, all these people are paying attention after all this time of lonliness and sorrow.  However, when I started reading I realize what good company I was among.  A bunch of good people that actually care.
This I am finding much harder to find these days.   It is not easy to deal with problems here and now but when you have people like yourselves, I absoulutely applaude(spelt wrong I know thx....) you, and you should do the same for yourselves.  I really don't commend people very often but when I see responses like that about a person I don't even know but from what I read has the same belief pattern that I may, I wish you all a good sleep tonight because after reading all the posts I am honestly touched and I would like to dedicate a poem that I have written years ago to you all.  Thx again, and MOM please read to to bottom pls. rest of you, this is personal.;)

I

Many, Many decades ago;

There was a time when animals,

Could run free through the dense forests.

Like the birds in the open sky,

They thought that nothing could ever hurt,

Their dweeling.

However, there are some things that they!

Did not have any control over.

There was a time trees.

They created a beautiful sea of greenery,

and shadows of sun.

Producing fresh, clean air,

fallen leaves blew nonchalantly in the wind;

Like playing a cat and mouse game.

However, there are some things that they!

Did not have any control over.

There was a time when fish.

Swam through the clear blue sea,

like a graceful dancer.

the waves rippled, violently at times;

over the underwater kingdom.

However, there are some things that they!

Did not have any control over.

There was a time when humans.

Ran through the forests.

There was a time when humans.

Gazed at a sacred forest of trees.

There was a time when humans.

Waded through the fresh tides of the ocean.

This time has now been and gone.

II

Planes now soar through the sky;

Leaving the flutter of birds in its memories.

Cranes creating new structures;

Replacing the crane that roamed through the marsh.

Skyscrapers tower above the urban materialism;

Only to leave the unnatural substitute of a tree.

Oil tankers glide through the treacherous sea;

While dolphins chase the anonymous intruder.

Violent tempers surge through the back ally’s;

Abandoning lifeless hearts in the process.

III

We can now go to the zoo;

too examine our past.

gazing at what could have been such an attractive planet.

Now we can only ramble through the shadows of sunlight.

wade through the ripples of waves;

with hesitation.

Our recolation has been shattered by twisted occurrences.

Change, Changes Everything.

We are what we have created.

Now we must take it for what it really is,

And not what we can’t make it.

we are lucky to have found this site and every day i am glad that mark has provided us a place to seek guidance, advice, refuge and comfort.  the world around us can be cruel and unforgiving, impossible to navigate and full of devious nasty heartless people, so having a place like this is truly like an oasis in the desert.  it is so wonderful and amazing that people who have never met, living all over the world, can come together here and try and make a difference.

i have come to view this community as my second family, because they offer me things my family cannot.  no one here judges us that we are incompetent or lazy or whiners or that we are just not trying hard enough.  no one makes us feel sub-human for our financial difficultuies or our inability to repay that which we borrowed.  instead, we recieve unconditional support, a shoulder to cry on, and a place to vent our frustrations.

my grandmother gave me four simple rules to live by.  play fair, unless someone else changes the rules.  two, if you cant say anything nice, keep your mouth shut.  dont complain about it, do something about it.  and the last, the old standby - do unto others...so i do what i can when i can actually type, hoping against hope that when it counts my karma will kick in and i will get some good luck, for a change.

we could all use a little halp and some good luck, when dealing with this hell that is student loans, after all.
