This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hi all,

Here's the situation:

1. I'm a Canadian citizen living in the USA since 2001

2. I an Ontario student loan dating back to 1996 that I had paid per month up until 2003 when I took a Canadian student loan for a few classes at school in the USA

3. I made the student loan payments as required up until 2012

4. In 2011 I filed for chapt. 13 bankruptcy in the USA and entered the 5 year chapt. 13 repayment plan

5. In 2012, I realized after talking to my USA attorney that because I included my Canadian student loans on my USA bankruptcy I did not have to continue making payments and stopped from that point forward

6. I received a few calls from Canada over those years asking for payment (I think they were from the national student loan service center) but referred them to my attorney as the attorney instructed and that was it. My attorney stated they were violated US law by contacting me during my Chapt. 13 repayment plan

7. 4 months ago my Chapt.13 bankruptcy completed and was discharged (completely)

8. 2 weeks ago I received a letter from "Employment and Social Development Canada" telling me I owe $3500 and to make a payment

9. I did not answer this letter or make a payment

10. A few days ago I received a letter from CRA who is a Collections Contact Officer stating I owe the above amount etc.. etc.. and to contact them immediately to discuss payment and if I do not contact them within 15 days they will take legal action

I do not wish to make any payments and will not be returning to Canada at any point to live. I have a child here in the US and have a permanent greencard. My child is a US citizen. I also realize my canadian credit will take hits but am okay with this.

Questions:

1. What can happen if I choose to ignore the letter and any correspondence from CRA?
2. Should I contact CRA and speak to the collections officer? If no why? If so why?
3. Can I face any repercussions here in the US? If so, what?
4. Anything else I should be aware of?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks very much.

What is your current situation? Are you able to pay the loans?  Were your loans included in the bankruptcy?  Maybe you should talk to your bankruptcy trustee.

I'm not sure if there are many people on this site with a similar experience....
