This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Had provincial student loans from Newfoundland in starting in Dec 1995 and ending Dec 2000.  Defaulted because paperwork for interest releif was lost by CIBC.  The loans were bought back from the bank by the government in 2004 and I got served with a statement of claim in Feb 2011. If my loans all predate the change in legislation, can they still come after me?

Apparently the government changed the law in 2002 or 2004 to remove all limits on collections of provincial student loans.  I never heard a peep for almost 10 years and I thought I was in the clear.  I contacted the collections officer who told me to fill out a Statement of Financial Affairs to determine my ability to repay my loan. He made it sound easy and that getting an exemption would be no problem. Now I have to pay $250 a month or have my credit destroyed and wages garnished. I never took out any loans with the government, these loans were with CIBC.  The government bought the loans from CIBC.  The only way out is bankruptcy which I don't want to do.  All of my loans predated the change in law, which means I should be exempt.

Be very careful not to acknowledge the loan, otherwise you might lose your exemption.  They'll try to trick you into acknowledging the loan. For the law changes, I think you are referring to Ontario.

These loans were granted by CIBC and guaranteed by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador.  When CIBC got out of the loan collection business, the loans were purchased by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. They did send me a form called "acknowledgement of debt" that I did not fill out or return.

Were you served by the sherriff's office with documents from their justice department, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education?

I received a statement of claim that came by registered mail. My roommate signed for it.

The statement of claim was from the student loan corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was filed with the supreme court of Newfoundland and Labrador on Jan 14th.
