This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

About the only option you have is to open an account somewhere else and write off the current one as a loss. Any deposits going into a frozen account have to be applied against the debt. This is the sort of thing that makes one sit up and pay attention. I strongly suggest that you contact your parents to find out if they kept any of that mail. It is aboslutely essential that you find out who has frozen your account and why. Maybe ask the bank to provide a copy of the third party demand. Without this info there is almost nothing you can do sorry to say.

This is another reason that I state not to give out personal cheques. You are only giving out information for them to work against you with.

Money orders cost more but no one can take money out of your account.

For safety reasons, I have my bank account joint with a family member that is in another province.

This way no one can touch it.
And I never have to worry about my account being drained or frozen.

ok its a court order, they got my account through the gov't. I have direct deposit, now on top of garnishments, they have froozen my acct, put a hold on it for $15,000 so i can't even take out money to pay my rent or bus/train pass for the month. its called i couldn't pay when the collection agency was asking for $500 when i make $1000 a month. now they are going to be taking $400 a month.

What are your gross earnings per month? How many dependants do you have? The garnishee would depend on a) the province you live, and; b) the amount of gross income that you earn.

Also, is the account with the same institution where you received the student loan?

If the issue has escalated to litigation, and an execution order pending, the collectors normally wouldn't be contacting you. Is the colelction agency still involved?

 More details please.

 Johnny

Have you contacted the lender (plaintiff)? Explain your situation and how the situation is placing you at severe risk. They will lighten up in most cases. If the plaintiff tells you to contact their lawyer, let me know.

IF the enforcement is severe enough to cause exstreme burden, they have to be fair. If there is anything I can do for you, let me know.

If you had received court documents at all then contact info should be on those. 902 is Nova Scotia. If you have difficulty finding the right area to appeal, send me an email at CFW Group and I will help you track down a contact name and number.

Nothing you have said gives any indication if this is a student loan. Of course given that this is a student loan forum it is natural to assume so. Usually accounts are frozen due to revenue canada third party demand orders. Garnishee orders usually go to your employer. I don't see how you can follow any of Johnny's advice if you don't even know who the third party demand is from. Finding this out is your first step.

Now if I were you, I would open up an account somewhere else and contact my payroll department with the new direct deposit info. You will lose everything that goes into your account to whomever until you do what I say. I'm sure the bank will give you all the details.

Good point, Ferren. If it is in fact a CCRA enforcement, it is just as easy to negotiate "down" with them in the event that severe hardship occurs.

Actually that doesn't matter.  My account was frozen because the joint person was delayed in getting approved for interest relief.

Hi; i am new to this but i am at the end of my rope with student loan... i had a student loan way back in 2003... i was  a single mom just out of a abusive relationship, thought i was doing a wonderful thing by getting a student loan and going back to college, if i knew then what i know now i would not have done that... i was living in newfoundland at the time... i done almost two yrs in medical office admin course, i lost out few courses and never finished to get my diploma because i ended up with a slip and fall accident and because of it i suffered siatica (pinched nerve) for a full yr.
i never did get on track to afford paying back my student loan, they have harrassed me so much im at the point of a nervous breakdown, they have  froze my bank account with Scotia bank. i had to call them and cry to them not to do this, i was receiving social assistance at the time, a single mom with a child and rent to pay and food to buy, and they are still harassing me, i dont know what to do anymore, i suffer deep depression because of it and the stress is making me sick...
i dont understand how the canadian gov can let this happen to its own people, when there is a crisis in other parts of the world, canadian gov is one of the first ones to respond with relief fund, yet they would starve their own people in their own country...how cruel is that??
Something should be done, and someone should speak out about this, its unfair...how do they expect people to pay back student loans when they simply just cant afford to!! do they expect to get blood from a stone too???
there should be a new medical health diagnosis called the student loan syndrome, cause owing a student loan literally makes me sick!!!

You need to immediately change banks   - to one that you didnt have any student loans with, and deposit your funds there....

if you cant afford a student loan dont get it. but it is interest free and hardly anyone pays it back.
if on welfair never give them your bank info say u dont have one so you can save money.

if banks take money just get cheacks mailed and cash at cash store for now in cash.

i always thought if u went joint or split account with someone they cant touch it becasue they cant punish someone for someone elses mistake. unless your marryed.

always act like you dont use or have a back account even to jobs if you can becasue they cant find out where you cash it. just lie

Hmmm...not really the ethics that we probably grew up as kids believing in,  but thanks for your suggestions....  not that I condone your suggestions, but they do reflect the realities of our times!
