This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I’d like to add my voice to the vouch for John Leblanc of the CFW Group as well.

I contacted John in August 2009 for help with a student loan nightmare, after receiving a letter from the government to collect on a defunct loan. The government and I had by that point reached a sort of impasse where I quickly felt I was way out of my league because no matter what I did to try to get more information it either seemed to only fuel to the fire they were lighting under me or was met with absolute disregard from whichever agency I was dealing with at the time. Simply put, it felt like everything they said was being used against me, and everything I said was also being used against me. Not a fun situation to be in.

So like I said, I called John in August 2009, not entirely sure what to expect or what was going to happen. He quickly set me at ease, telling me exactly what he was going to do and how he was going to do it, reassuring me that he was on my side… if anyone called me or mailed me about the loan I was to call him immediately and let him take care of it.

And he took care of it exactly as he said he would. As confirmed on a conference call with the government this morning: John Leblanc saved me about $21000.00 in federal loans! I’m –still- reeling from that number. I wasn’t lying when I told John I felt like crying. The wait was well worth that moment when I heard the agent confirm it over the phone. TWENTY ONE THOUSAND.

I’ll be frank, I had my moments where I wanted the process to move faster. I talked to John about four times over the course of the 2.5 years and each time he had to re-assure me that patience was needed when dealing with the government, that requests for information can take months to be processed and still be denied for whatever reason. In hindsight, looking at how it was when I was trying to deal with the government/banks on my own, it makes sense: I was getting NOWHERE with them over a three year period, so getting SOMEWHERE every six months was a definite improvement. And now, 2.5 years later I still can’t believe the outcome of it all.

Thanks again!
