This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I was under a proposal starting in 2005. I was making payments on my student loans during my proposal (had sent letters from trustee etc. as I was supposed to to make payments if I wished to do so.) In 2009 I received a letter from a collection agency stating that a loan was now in collections. I called my trustee who then sent a letter to the agency stating I was under a proposal.. so it was then apparently taken care of. Nobody knew why my loan was sent to collections, as it wasn't supposed to be allowed to be moved because of the proposal.

Now that my proposal is over I recently got another letter stating that this student loan is now again in collections. I have contacted CIBC the loan with which this was through originally, my other loan with them is still with CIBC and I still make payments on it... but my ontario portion for some reason was sent to collections. Nobody can tell me why- they just keep sending me in circles.

I had one girl on the phone at CIBC who told me that my one loan account number was "Consolidated" and that she also sees another account number listed (which is the one sent to collections). BUT I have no Record of this OTHER account number that she stated to me. This account number does not appear on any of my loan documents. From what she told me about my accounts it looks as if they closed my one student loan account number, and made a new one (which was sent to collections). She said on one of my loans I was making double payments some months because it was "consolidated" (and I was never informed that it was). For example I had account number 561 and account number 599 and was making payments to these two accounts each month- then the bank did something to it (without informing me) and the 599 account no longer exists, and there is now a different account number (this one went to collections).

It's almost like they made a new account with my one loan - did not inform me... so I was not able to make payments on this loan and therfor it was then sent to collections. I was told that CIBC would send me all the reports of my loans payments etc. So I am waiting for that- and don't want to pay anything to the collection agency until I figure out what they have done.

I am so confused... but this is what I think has happened.

Now my questions:

What should I do???
Am I going to end up paying to this collection agency anyways?
I am told they are going to take my income tax refund if I don't pay my loan to the collection agency- if I am making monthly payments to them do they still take my income tax refund?

I looked at all the info for loan rehabilitation but it looks like this would not apply to me- as this is an ontario loan that they have sent to collections.. is that correct?

please any help would be greatly appreciated.
