Hey guys,

First time poster, love everything about this page, helped answer alot of my questions.

One thing that I have not been able to find ANY information on is this loan forgiveness/remission.  I had a classmate who had this, and the government paid off over 1/2 of his loan, but I lost touch with him and haven't been able to find out where he got that information.

I've tried contacting my loan provider, RBC, who just laughed and stone walled me, my MLA can't really get a straight answer, minister of education doesn't give any information on it, and theres nothing related to this that I can find, anywhere.

Can someone give me a link, or just something that can point me towards the form?

My loans over 3 years came to $25,000 and currently, within the industry that I work, I've not been able to break the $30,000 after 5 years.  I want to go back to school to retrain and look at something different, but unfortuantely with my current debt load from previous student loans, I don't wanna rack up more then I have to.  I know that there is relief for this, but at $30,000, interest relief doesn't work, and I can't find anything else that fits what I need, which is essentially to have the loan partially or fully forgiven.

Anything would be helpful, thanks in advance.

Merry Xmas

Best thing to do is to go to the Alberta site and look at the loan remission info...
On the website main menu there is a button called "provincial links" the info can be found on the alberta web link...

For your convenience here's the info...

Hi,

Thank you so much for getting me that info, unfortunately I think I should have been more clear

In my situation I had my loan in 1999/2000, but the info here works for loans in this context:

"you received Alberta Student Loans after July 31, 2001"

The problem is, is that I can find anything pre-2001 regarding how it works for me.  Any further help would be much appreciated.

Try going to google and enter
risk-shared alberta "student loan" remission

That will get you some info.

A couple of pages come up...
Basically loans back then were with the banks... but then the banks bailed on them and they created a harmonized program....

Here is some info... but its fairly old.
http://www.rpap.ab.ca/pdf/1996_RPAP_Evaluation_-_FINAL_repor t.pdf

Loan remission is usually only available on graduation.. applying 5 years later would not likely be available... I would suggest searching for grants, scholarships and bursaries if you want to continue your schooling...
